Kill wild cats, yes / no?

I am with you on this Simmo and being a bushie I can see where you are coming from.
It was a news segment at Hilarys Marina and the "do gooders" were complaining about the cats being caught and killed. City people really have no idea what destruction to wild life that pretty little kitty can do to our wildlife. Oh well they got their 5 minutes of fame climbing over the rock wall calling puss puss. Don't think they quite grasped the concept that they are wild/feral cats and will not come to you cos you called puss puss!! Go the council I say!!

You are absolutely right.

We have young thugs roaming our cities because back a few years we had all these liberal idiots who said we shouldn't chastise or punish our kids if they do wrong. They are just expressing themselves.

We are reaping the results now.

There have been so many studies about feral cats and the damage they are and continuing to do to our wildlife. I saw one docco where feral cats devastated the local wildlife to the point where the cats died because there was nothing left to eat. I am not 100% sure but I think it was a CSIRO study.

There are just so many animals that have been introduced into Australia that should not be here.

Water Buffalo, Pigs, Cane toads, goats, rabbits, foxes, to name a few that cause havoc to the environment .

However it is obvious we have some people who will object if you swat a fly..

With the re-emergence of The Night Parrot in the north of Australia, what would these people have us do, let feral cats kill off something thought to be extinct many years ago.

The same think happens at Two Rocks Marina sufil, the fishermen feed the feral cats that live on the groin and their population has exploded. A country Bilby population were nearly wiped out by them and they had to build a special enclosure for them, I saw one they caught down there in a trap before it was taken away. At one stage I was working at Canning Vale markets and they had a lot of bush around there that had heaps of ferals. They grow huge and become very proficient feral killers. People do not keep their cats in at night or if they do they are very rare that I have seen from local cats around me.

My personal solution for ones that come into my yard and pee/poo all over the place including spraying on my front door on more than one occasion is to catch them in a cat trap left out at night, then while they are in the trap soak them well with a garden hose, then open the cage, they take off like a rocket never to be seen in my yard again.

Agree with you Simmo.

We used to live on a farm next to a piggery that didn't cover over the dead pigs. Wild cats everywhere, some so big they were scary. A bullet does a good job.

Bump em all off I say Simmo.

In the 60's foxes would kill 15 lambs per night on one farm and farmers paid us to shoot em.

On one farm 2 feral cats were seen by farmer dining on fox killed carcasses, however they then progressed to killing the day old lambs themselves.

We caught one in a trap and it cleared the blackberries for over a metre all around and couldn't get out of the trap. It was big (as some one else said above) and died on the spot.

Later in the day we shot its mate, farmer was so happy, but foxes were even more devastating and often hard to find/shoot.

Not quite as spectacular as a .243 80gr ballistic tip bullet at 300 yards......

I hate feral cats with a passion...would dearly love to see a bounty on them hey. But in saying that ..we have two gorgeous and loving pet cats who are very much a part of this household...and are inside whenever we are not home ...and indoors each and every night.

Thanks everybody for the positive response. When I posted, I wasn't sure how it would go down, but now I think it must be close to 100% share my feelings about this horrible imbalance in the Australian bushland. I am past it, but would love to see somebody younger start a definite project / program to tidy up our backyard. Anyway I will send the link to this page to the shire concerned to let them know they are not on there own.

Littledick, I ring the local shire and they drop off a cat trap. I buy a cheap tin of sardines which have a good smell. The next day the they come back and get the trap. Could be worth a call to your shire.

Feral cats are rife all over this country - saw one at The Pebbles in NT that was huge - well fed on native animals.

Anyone been to William Creek lately - when we were there several years ago, about 1k out of town was what they called "The Cat Tree", laden with dead feral cats. The store had a photo of a cat that had been cut open - 13 species of small native animals inside, not digested, so not caught for food, just the need to kill.

Rules re cats should be more stringent - if you have a cat keep it in your own backyard, don't let it wander, friends went so far as to put a light electric fence all round their property, their cats never go out of the yard.

Had a cat when on the farm, was naive, she was let out for the first 2 years of her life and then she started bringing home dead birds. Never got out of the back door for the next 13 years.

Yes - they kill our native wildlife for the pleasure of killing, not to eat. These, wild dogs, goats and camels are decimating our unique flora and fauna !

Totally agree, we had a feral cat here at the park which previous owners had been trying to catch in a trap for years, very cunning and very proficient killer of the lovely birds here. Now she is gone, thanks to a good marksman. we love cats but would never have another one here at the park now our old puss has passed on.

I camp in a remote outback town in Queensland. When I'm camped on the river there I borrow a trap from the local council & set it at my camp. I usually get a few cats over 2 or 3 week period. A couple of years ago I caught 26!
Nature works though. 4 or 5 years ago there was a bush rat plague with the little buggers chewing everything. The next 2 or 3 years was a feral cat plague & the rats gone. The last couple of years has been a wild dog plague & less cats.

How come you never mentioned the worst of them all.......humans have wrought more devastation on the environment that any other living thing.

OK, for anybody that has a serious Feral Cat problem, this might be a good starting place. You only have to catch them, then phone the local Shire who should come and get the cat and finish the job off for you. It looks like a fair price as well, and you can share with other people for 5 bucks a time if you want to re-coup some of your money.
