1. The beautiful laser cut metal signs going into Marble Bar had also been vandalised when we were there - The concrete pad they were set in was spray painted with words - even sailors don't use.
2. The State/Territory Border sign 15 K's out of Camooweal had piles of faeces on the mountings making a photo opportunity under the sign impossible.
3. One of the picnic table pavilions between Cooper Pedy and Alice Springs had faeces piled all over the concrete tables - needless to say we didn't stay for lunch.
4. One of the composting drop toilets had the solar panels stolen and the electrical tool box smashed and vandalised.
I could go on but: It is about time the scum that are roaming around these rest areas were severely penalised and I do mean PENAL.
We try to tidy up these area where we can by binning bottles/cans etc - Even have a pair of long tongs to pick up papers (including loo) and burn.
Nomads and other travellers must note down number plates and vehicle types of the hoons etc. and make an effort to identify perpetrators - nearly everybody has got a camera on their phone, use it and give information to local shires and police.
If we don't make an effort to stop vandalism by reporting what we see there will soon be no places for us to stop.

Sent from my imperial66 typewriter using carrier pigeon, message sticks and smoke signals.
I was talking to a SA country policeman and he said in his patch, the majority of this sort of damage was done by locals and not by nomads, backpackers etc.
Guess the country suffers the same as the cities with this mindless and costly damage and cleanup/repair costs

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
There was one spot that comes to mind, That is a truck stop at the top end of the North West Highway, very near to the Junction where the Highway branches to go East to Hedland or West to start the Coastal Highway South,
This Truck stop is a large open area, easily visible from road, all that is there is a dunny, sitting right in the middle of the stop, the depositary is well made using steel beams and corrugated iron, this construction still didn't stop the vandals from reefing the door off it's hinges, it makes me wonder if a truckie got caught short one night and hooked a chain onto the door when the occupier didn't come out within a short period of time.
Another place we noticed vandalism was at a very large Free rest area called Nerren Nerren. 46km S of Billabong or 135 km NTH of North Hampton on the North West Coastal Highway...........
As you can see the area is well catered for with shaded picnic tables ( more added since photo taken )
Right in the middle you can see a large pole, this holds up a solar panel which did run a large light, no more, the metal box which held the deep cycle battery had been broken into that many times and the battery stolen, the Shire finally gave up and welded the box shut, now everyone is in the dark!!!
I agree with Possum 3, if anyone sees the Vandals at work, report the sods and hope the authorities catch and nail their hides to a wall,
K.J.

Haven't you noticed in EVERY town EVERYWHERE - not just at rest stops - the populace (quite probably of the younger variety) continue to rip up trees, kick down fences, break any thing and everything they can as often as they can - Friday and Saturday nights on the p1ss and other 'stimulants'.
Even if you just stay at home in your comfortable house/suburb/village these things will continue to occur all around you.
My idea of the cause/reason? There is no longer a sense of COMMUNITY by so many in society - particularly from those who would be from the era of our own children and it now carries through to their children. Even primary school kids are joining the 'fun'.
It is like what is now the 'myth' of the value of extended family ... community values no longer exist - in too many cases.
