Greens Lake; yesterday the Goulburn/Murry water  sent a truck & a small excavator out to compress the garbage in the bins & the clean up the bags that were on the ground from the school hols & the long weekend.

When the guy was finished he wondered over to a van for a chat. He informed me that the Goulburn/Murry water were neglecting the area with the intention of closing it to recreation; not a pleasant thought  considering the thousands of people that utilize this area.

This bugged me enough that I sent a email to the Goulburn/Murry water  for conformation yesterday arvo. This has resulted in a very rapid response to me with the following info; a great relief for all I would think.

Below is their email;;Thank you Goulburn/Murry water .

 

 

Hi Jim

 

Great to hear you enjoyed your stay.

 

There has been no decision made to close the lake for recreation. The storage is a valuable asset in relation to the movement of water around the GMW storage and irrigation network. The storage is also of great benefit to the social welfare of the local community, business and regional tourism.

 

The storage was temporarily closed last New Year`s Eve following a request from Victorian Police to close the venue because of poor behavior and violence the previous year. GMW assets were badly damage resulting in an extensive repair bill.

Hours of operation

Greens Lake is open to the public all year round except for the New Years Eve period. The Lake is closed to the public on the 30th and 31st of December and re-opens on the 1st of January.

Further information on storage levels is available on Goulburn Murray Waters internet site http://www.gmwater.com.au

 

I believe the site will be closed for New Year`s Eve 1n 2015 at the request of Victorian Police.

It's also a Wildlife Reserve & one of the best locations in Victoria to see Brolgas which is the only reason we go there occasionally.smile.gifsmile Not exactly an attractive place to stay & not much shade but it's FREE which makes it VERY popular.wink.gifwink

Phew Jim, you had me worried for a moment. Thank god it wasn't true. I wonder why the other guy said it was to be closed.

DD I haven't seen any Brolgas in all the years I've been going there. Maybe black swan, duck and some other water birds but no Brolgas. Are you sure you are talking about the same lale?

I thought Brolgas were a tropical bird. I am amazed that they could be at Greens lake, VIC.

Can be found as far south as Victoria Bill and a variation in NZ, see Wiki:

 There was a guy here yesterday that saw brolgas. I was not aware of them being here.

We've seen brolgas there many times as well as many other species. Greens Lake & nearby Lake Cooper are part of the Corop Wetlands. www.corop.com.au

We're amazed by how people travel around Australia not being fully aware of their surroundings.

 Lake Cooper is dry , they don't put water in as it's got to much salinity  in it

DD do you have any photo's of the Brolgas that you have seen there.

I have seen some of your photo's on this forum and you have a very good eye for seeing what some of us (Me) miss.

Maybe I have looked at at them and just thought another water bird BUT have missed out on something special

We're away at the moment, we do have some Brolga images in our mass storage bird image library at home.

You can't mistake a Brolga for anything else as they're around 5ft tall.

At Greens Lake a few years back I watched my missus chase two of 'em with her camera through a large clump of high reeds. She's 5ft 2ins tall & all I could see was her head & the Brolgas heads above the reeds. It gave me a laugh! smile.gif

They haven.t told you they are going to close it. they have said there has been no decision made. So that tells me , something is being considered. where there's smoke theres fire. Be a real shame to see it change. Anyway, time will tell. Regards. Rocket n strop

We managed to find an image with Brolgas that we'd posted on another Forum. These were photographed North of Hamilton VIC. There are lots of Brolgas near Miranatwa West of the Grampians & North of Dunkeld VIC.
