The general public are lied to by every-one from Governments to Big Business Etc.. When they get caught out it's a gold rush for Lawyers.
I saw today a report that "MOST" car company adds overstate fuel consumption figures by over 10%. This is a Govt. report and states that most fuel consumption figures are even higher but Australia's figures should be only 10%.
They quite clearly state that overseas figures are nearer 15%.
How do the same cars consumption figures equate to a 5% drop just because they are sold in Australia.
My maths wrong or do we have a Five per cent reduction just because we are in Australia.
No surprise than that we are lied to on a daily basis.

To allow consumers to compare one vehicle's fuel consumption against another, vehicle manufacturers are required by law to provide fuel consumption figures for the vehicles they produce. These figures are included on labels fitted to all new cars, in vehicle sales brochures and also on the Green Vehicle Guide web site.
Manufacturer supplied fuel figures are determined using a standard laboratory test that is designed to exclude the myriad of variables that a vehicle is subjected to in everyday driving. These variables include road, traffic and weather conditions, driving style and vehicle speed, load and condition. The figures produced cannot therefore be used as an indication of the fuel consumption a vehicle might achieve under actual operating conditions. Nor can they be compared to figures produced by on-road testing or on-board trip computers.
For most motorists, the only readily available fuel consumption test method involves actual on-road driving and calculation of fuel consumption based on the distance travelled and the volume of fuel used. Providing care is taken, this method offers a reasonably accurate means of determining actual fuel usage for a particular trip.
However, in addition to the vehicle and road related variables already mentioned, the accuracy of service station pumps and the vehicle's odometer, tyre pressures, the consistency of fills and even the ambient temperature and temperature of the fuel during filling can influence the final result produced by this method.
If you still feel like a bit of a long read, try this site, it also details very well just what "fuel consumption figures" for vehicles actually mean -
There obviously may be some 'fiddling' of fuel consumption data advertised for vehicles. However, the fuel consumption numbers arrived at in the laboratory tests need to be provided by law for assessment under the ADRs.
However, one needs to add to this, the usual "marketing ploys" of manufacturers (which also includes a vehicle's towing/carrying ability) then the waters are muddied further.
