Towing with an 80 Series Landcruiser

Is anyone out there towing a caravan using a 1992 80 series Turbo Diesel Toyota Landcruiser?

We are currently looking to purchase our first caravan (always had camper trailers) but are having problems with the towing capacity of the 1992 model, if anyone has one could they let me know what type and size van they are towing?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Donna

Welcome to the gang Donna, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Make sure you don't go over the max weights allowed for the Cruiser. Try to keep a little under if anything. Make sure you add the tow ball weight of what ever van you get to your overall Cruiser weight.

Keep Safe out there.

I'd check out the series 80 landcruiser forum - http://www.lcool.org/index.html

Those blokes know them back to front.

Good Luck.

First thing we did when looking to buy our first caravan (Just got it in July 2015) checked what the towing capacity was for our '92 Maverick TD42 then checked on the tow bar what was max ball weight

So the Mav can tow 2500KG and ball weight 150kg

Our van is 1550kg tare -- 1950kg aggregate -- 140kg ball weight

So basically you just need to know what your limits are and yes there are some really nice buys out there so we found but unable to tow due to weight.

Cheers

Vince

On this trip around the block I have seen a few 80's on the road with older type vans in tow.

Up untill two yrs back we used a 75 series troopy, 4.lr turbo towing 1.5t camper trailer & boat around the block in all directions, then a 20ft tandem axle caravan with no probs, not real quick but reliable. We still have it as it;s like part of the family, now tow with an Iveco truck.

Hi there, We have a 1996 Turbo diesel 80 series and used to tow a small Golf. When we decided to upgrade we were horrified to find the max we could tow was 2 ton and on top of that the Toyota towbar capacity was ridiculously under anything on the market. We had a lot of trouble getting any solution from Toyota but Opposite Lock seemed to know all about the problem and upgraded the towbar to a 3500 grading. This still doesn't mean we can tow 3500 as the weight of the vehicle only allows us to tow 2500 kg. Our new van is rated at 1900 kg and we are careful about ball weight and try to travel as light as possible. It was disappointing to find what we thought was a perfect towing vehicle was in fact a "lightweight". Hope this is of some help. Molluscan

Hi,

With the 80 series there were two different tow weights.
Pre August 1996 compliance you had a tow max of 2500kgs and if it was post August 96 then the tow rating was 3500kg as was mine which was a petrol auto complianced September 1996.

Cheers AL

Hi AL, All,
Re 80 Series, my understanding was that some 1995 and 1996 cruisers could be upgraded to tow 3500Kg with 350kg on the ball (with an approved towbar), BUT the vehicle had to be inspected/approved by a certified engineer and in SA, Engineering approval submitted to the appropriate SA Transport Dept.

The Lcool Forum should be able to clarify the above,

Peter
