Our Garmin has free lifetime updates (the device, not me I suspect), and I check for updates before any lengthy trip especially if it involves driving through a city.
Anyhow, I did an update on ours recently, and while the data is more current, the silly thing now says things like in 800metres turn right onto 35
It previously would have said in 800 metres turn right onto Gympie Rd or whatever road.
While State Road Authorities give roads numbers, even their staff would need a map.Nobody else in Australia knows roads by their number. Street signs dont tell you what numbers the streets are at every intersection.
If we identified streets by numbers how could we honour ex polies and other luminaries? Imagine living at number 13, 14796 Street!
I think I might have to take Garmin to task over this travesty.
In the meantime, has anyone else had this problem and found a solution that didn't involve buying a different brand?

I did an update on 2 Garmin Nuvis about 6 months ago. Just worked out of the box. Sounds like an interesting glitch. Have you tried looking at the way points in a text editor?

I updated ours prior to our last trip about 4 months ago now and I noticed we were driving on some very strange roads at times.

Driving along the barrier highway towards broken hill the garmin told us we were driving on binns 4wd track!!!
Today driving along the Premer to Quirindi rd the garmin told me I was on Edwards st!!!
weird I tell ya
I will do another update and see how we go but if no better I will do a map error report to garmin via their website

I have found when you drive thru a town the hyway name changes to a street name then back to hyway name when you leave the town

They all seem to do that. The elipse of uncertaintly goes onto the side roads. It is particularly distracting when you are on unfamiliar flyovers. It can be an interesting exercise to set your GPS to track mode and leave it stationary. After a few hours load the track into Basecamp and you will be surprised how skittish they are. It is easy to get the feel that the GPS is precise down to a few metres. There is a bit more to it than that.

With most incar GPS navigators, they do not always show your actual location on the map. They will show you on the closest road to the point, that the GPS receiver in the devices, determines you are. if there is any error in the determined position, or error in the map coordinates or possibly even the wrong datum point selected for the map data in use, the closest road to your perceived position may be a side road. Sometimes it may just be a case of the receiver not having at least 3 suitable satellites in clear view giving you a positional error.

I got that Binns 4WD track approaching Broken Hill last year. As it wasn't a 4WD track and we were heading in the right direction I ignored it at the time but I'm surprised it still hasn't been corrected

Is the Garmin showing the street you are on or the next intersection of note?
A few years ago, I set my Zumo to dirt to go trail bike riding. Then a few days later, took off on a cruiser and forgot to switch back to no-dirt. 25km on dirt on Forestry roads was a challenge with a 320kg bike, 100kg rider and probably 50kg of camping gear, including food.
I'm just about to do a Garman update in the morning but remember approaching Mckay QLD on the Bruce Hwy the sign said Bruce hwy strait ahead but Garman in its wisdom took me to the left and around a couple of side streets then out in the middle of know where but ended up coming to Bruce hwy on the other side of McKay. Seemed a very strange way indeed but then I'm strange so maybe Garman has got to know me.
Beat ya, Bruce and KFC

Doug,
you might check your settings. I have found that if you choose the shortest route, not the fastest, the GPS will take you on some strange shortcuts. Bypassing Grafton is an example. Mostly we disregard strange commands and let her "recalculate". Sometimes if we are not in a hurry we play her silly game.
I am not sure whether our Garmin still shows the name of the street where you are to next turn, or whether it has started showing a number. I will check tomorrow.

I have recently done the latest update and yes it calls roads by their route number now instead of by name
My settings for navigation are use main roads only
avoid toll roads
don't have any problems
They've probably done it to save on costs. Mrs GPS only needs to pronounce a set number of number words, rather than thousands of syllables to cover every road and street name. At least she won't be saying orstral street instead of Austral street any more.
