Single Burner Gasmate Canister Stoves Back On The Market At Bunnings...

I was in Bunnings yesterday and noticed they had a pile of Gasmate Single Burner Canister Stoves for sale, previously Bunning had removed them from sale when they were banned.    They looked the same as the old ones but had "New Model" on them.

I asked an assistant what the situation was and she said the new ones had been modified to meet safety standards although she did not know what the mods were.

I had a quick look at them but without the old ones to compare with was unsure of what the mods were, be careful buying a second hand one as they look exactly the same......

Apparently the double burner butane stoves will be on sale at Bunnings from October. The Gasmate part number is PC2080. The price wasn't given at this time.

Team the stove up with a Gasmate griddle plate part number SG2085 which is available right now from various outlets - although doesn't appear on the Bunnings web site I expect they will be at the same time as the double stoves.

By the way, Bunnings seems to be the cheapest store for Gasmate items.

I think I would be asking to see the modifications, or at least have them explained to me, before I bought one,

Easy enough to print a sticker and shove it on anything !!!

Off topic but there should be separate Men's & Women's Bunnings stores. I can't stand waiting in line for ages at the checkout with all my important ''man stuff'' while the woman in front of me buys pot plants & snail pellets. LOL.
As for the stoves they're pretty ordinary why would anyone want one?

I know there was a ban and explosion hazard warning put out to owners on the old ones but was there any mention of a direct swap of old for new or is it a case of Stiff Luck China the Chinese economy can't afford to exchange them.

was in Bunnings Batemans Bay about a week ago, Vic, and didn't see anything other than 100s of cannisters. Will have another look.

We left our old one at home in December and wish we hadn't. Ended up buying (probably a banned one) unit in a country SA town. The sales lady reckoned is was an newly approved one (yeah, right). Looks exactly like our old one, which we have used for 15 years.

Still reckon its people either using frypans too large for the unit and causing heat to be fed straight onto to gas canister - with fire or explosion - or cheap gas canisters.

We use our new cooker, but away from our van and careful of the size of the frypan or pot. No problems so far. Our old one, at home as been used for about 8 years

That would be me in front of you DD. I frequent Bunnings as I am a Gardener, hehe.

I have actually found Masters to be cheaper for a lot of items than Bunnings, not seen any single gas burners in any of the 5 stores I frequent.

I have been left one by the previous owners of my van but since I am short enough to go into the van without having to put the pop top up, I can make a cuppa on the stove when I stop, so shall be giving it away along with the dozen canisters they left.

My neighbour, a firie, says they are called out about 10 times a week to home unit fires from people using them, he said the kitchen companies are doing a roaring trade.

Hi Keith,

Still off topic.

In my opinion, this is Very Good for myself. My lambie go's for the weeds, and I can get on in the man  stuff section.biggrin without the wining.

Q . Why do you need that thing for? Maintenance on the travels Lambie. OK then.

See what I mean Keith. Smarter then the average Bear.smile

PS: Our new Bunnings store has a coffee shop to boot. Lambie gets a cupper & me A chocolate Hedge Hog. Yummy!juggle.gif

Hey Jim

I have picked a few at garage sales. I reckon they are the ducks when stopping overnight and cant be bothered setting up all the overpriced must have stuff. The reason they are unsafe is because a few people put big wide pots on them and the heat went to the sides and over heated the canister. All it takes is a bit of common sense.
In case your wondering, like a lot of other people we do not cook in the van

It was Bunning in Morley, WA I saw them in yesterday Bruce, agree about using the right size pots, I think there is even a warning about that on the unit or with the info sheet that comes with it.

I think some models did have a problem with the can connection if it was not seated right, so perhaps they have modified that part to make sure the canister cannot be used unless seated properly, I couldn't see anything on the internet about any modifications, only the warnings from previously.

Bunnings had them on a high profile sales area, with the "new model" stickers on them.

N & R, there are a lot of others like yourselves that use these instead of cooking inside, they have been doing it for years as you know.

 Hi Nomes,

You know I do not believe that statement there by your neighbour " a firie, says they are called out about 10 times a week to home unit fires from people using them".

Sounds like an urban myth in the making to me !biggrin

Big W have been selling the cannisters for about 4 months now which have labels on the cardboard saying theyre the new ones and meet the various Standards.

Havent been in one of their stores for about 2 months now (haven't found any where we have travelled), but they had shelves and shelves of 5 packs of cannisters, but no burners to fit them into. Either they haven't got it together, or theres a lot of people out there buying them and continuing to use them in their old and illegal (in WA at keast) to use cookers lol.

We do cook inside, but nothing that smells strongly - they go onto the Baby Q outside (like a steak) or if we're in a hurry, on the our trusty little cooker.

We met a couple touring in their 'van and got friendly with them. They were offal lovers and she used to cook tripe inside the van as well as kidneys and lambs fry !! You could smell it outside when you walked past, even when they weren't there and the van was closed up (and I like offal, except for tripe)

If we stop for a cup of tea (when I cant find a place that makes decent coffee - and I always look at the size of their machine first - small machine gets a smile and out the door treatment) then the kettle goes on the gas burner in the 'van.

They were down the eastern end near the café, I was there around the same time, had a cuppa in the café.  I live in Yokine.

Bruce, I don't think the canisters were unsafe and Bunnings Morley continued to sell them as they also fitted other gas items they had on sale.    The problem with the canisters was the stove connection gas shut off valve, I assume that has now been modified on the stove to prevent this happening.

See this link about the previous units;

I think the main modification is the new sticker that says: "Not for use by children or people with an IQ lower than 50"

I have just Emailed Gasmate Aust, asking what the modifications are, they have yet to reply.

I'll post the reply here, if and when it arrives.
