The real reason behind 60 Elected MP’s not seeking re-election!

The real reason behind 60 Elected MPs not seeking re-election! Sixty elected members of the federal government have now reported they have made the decision not to run in the upcoming next election! It's a very high number compared to previous elections. Some of them tell us that it's for family reasons, others for their desire to serve their fellow citizens in other fields and many other great stories to make us cry for them. Besides all the tear jerking that politicians have been giving about retiring here is something else to consider. Coming at the end of 2015 a change in the pension for MP's ensures that the age of full retirement for an MP having served at least 6 years, will no longer be 55 years but 65 years. Thus any MP not yet 65 and who wants to benefit from the present pension scheme need only not run in the next election and thus will draw for 10 years longer a government pension of over $100,000/year. For an elected MP approaching 55 and who is not running, that means about $1 million that he/she would not receive should he/she run and win again. One should also add the severance premium (between $80,000 and $125,000) upon his/her departure. We understand better now all these sudden "family emergencies", appreciate the newfound desire to advance his/her career in a government job or a committee of some sort and have two or three salaries (and possibly two or three pensions). Not bad as a justification to not run, eh?

One word - disgusting. When you look at what they get on a pension, and the amount everyday pensioners have to live on, where are "the entitlements" talked about by Mr Hockey??!!

The whole system is corrupt and about time Australians realised it.Both sides are guilty, corrupt unions, favours for financial support etc.expenses within the guidelines they set and us fools just continue paying our taxes year after year.

confuseconfuseconfuseconfuseconfuse We as a majority ,need to stand up and be heard .All this rorting going on every day there is some new expence that pollies hit us tax payers with .The latest one I just read about 2day was for new mothers taking nannies or partners on trips business class for supposed work engagements .This not a post about woman just that anyone else does not get the same allowances .They are allowed to claim for the cost of the trip.I know we have to move with the times but where do we draw the line, they get paid more than a fair wage ,with living away from home allowance and all the rest .They need to work out if they work or stay home with family.Rip me to bits if ya fink im rong furiousfuriousfuriousfuriousfuriousfurious.

Maybe there needs to be a sunset clause added to pollies benefits after retirement . The pension for old pollies is almost the national debt Why is it an old pollie gets unlimited travel with Gold Pass, Office space in major CBD's, Cars and Drivers , Lets face it if it wasn't for their public exposure as a pollie their careers in the tax dodge industry would be rather ordinary The trough isn't big enough for all of them .

It is so depressing. It's seems the majority of politicians, have no problems going to the trough. How many do you think believe of giving everyone a fair go? Question is what can we do to make them accountable? Petitions, making sure the media doesn't drop the story?

dING, where did you glean this gem form? It looks like a rewrite of this one to fit the local federal parliament and not originally about the locals - http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/06/22/family-versus-finances-t_n_7639614.html

Yes this type of thing crops up frequently. One of the more notable ones is one of these chain letters listing the numbers of members of the senate that have been charged with fraud, wife beating and bankruptcy. It has been posted on the forums as referring to the Oz Senate. One of the give-aways is that one of the categories has more transgressors than members in the local senate, it was aimed at US senators.

To save embarrassment I copy the first couple of sentences into Google search and look for the original source. You can copy and paste whole paragraphs into Google search and it will search on that.

Seems to happen a lot doesn't it. On forums and facebook. I do the same, and paste a good sized chunk into google.
