Firstly let me say we love our babyq bbq, and I feel it is by far the best bbq out there, but, I am on my second grill plate now, the first rusted out really bad in just over 3 years, I treated it correctly, no water on it while hot, cleaned and oiled as per instructions but the dreaded rust came through.
Now to Weber's great service they replaced free of charge just under a year ago with the newer 2 piece one, great it looked better and the enamel was thicker so it seemed, but alas yesterday when I went to cook something the dreaded rust spots are breaking through again !
Is it just me or do others have this problem ? is there a prevention ? or do we just keep claiming new grills under warranty ?
As said I clean with the proper weber brush oil with rice bran oil, never put water near it when hot, it's just frustrating to have such a fantastic product let itself down by one thing.
I love my Q as well but always leave it without cleaning when finished then most times just wipe over with BBQ wipes, occasionally though I have to give a once over with the triangular wire brush first. That leaves the grill with a good coating to stop any moisture. I have had a Q since introduced to the market and was told by a BBQ expert who is based on the Mornington Peninsula VIC to do that and seems to work.
Did I say I love my Q?

Doug I actually leave mine overnight sometimes then clean before use with a quick brush, re oil then cook. It's always well oiled and never dry, just cannot understand it.
No problem with my hot plate, only clean it with selleys bbq wipes before using it. Always use olive oil on it. Have left it out in rain down at green lakes a few times to.
I am a little confused? Do you mean the grill or the Weber BBQ plate which I thought was aluminium anyway???
I have never had a problem either way, I always brush my grill with a wire brush and water while it is HOT and I always use a non stick aluminium Tepanyaki style Plate when I need a plate.

The grill is ceramic coated steel.
Banjo, by chance do you use a cast iron flat plate for eggs etc on the Weber? Do you leave it on the grill when finished? Just wondering if this may cause your rusting.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head ! I often use the double piece of foil under the trivet, and it sometimes gets left for next day till i remove, I wonder if Its causing electrolysis between the dissimilar metals ?
I also use a cast iron skillet in there but always remove after cooking anyway, did have the Aldi aluminium tepanyaki plate but I dont like the idea of teflon being baked in there, think I will email weber again and send them some photos to see if they have any ideas.
I checked and this new 2 piece grill plate is just 10 months old, but we travel full time and it gets "lots" of use. It's only small spots of rust but I know from the last one that once it starts it's very rapid, will try and post a pic of my previous grill plate.
We have had our Baby Q, since 2010...no rust and we do exactly what Doug does. Leave it without cleaning...then if we need to use it, we clean it with BBQ wipes.
We love Baby Q as well.
