Aldi and roof racks

we have been quoted for a ally roof rack and a steel one from arb. Steel a lot dearer, which would be okay as steel one way dearer for Holden colarado.

also going today to Aldi to look at car roof shades for $169. Are they okay and can you fix them on side of roof basket.

Rainy Hi,

Not sure about the quality of Aldi roof shades. Presume You are meaning the pull out awning?

I have one fitted to my ARB roof 1500mm basket. Works very well, I welded three predrilled 25x 4mm flat steel straps to the basket that the awning bolts to. Easy to put on & remove & very stable. I do a lot of off and rough road work so the little extra effort was worthwhile.

Mike.

Sounds good. Can you comment about the alloy roof basket from 4x4 or steel from arb which is way dearer of course

Lorraine,

Can't comment about the alloy basket as have not seen them.

I am very happy with the ARB unit, have had it for about 10 years of hard work and abuse they are very robust but the downsides are cost and weight. Would suggest if going steel You need to be prepared to go over the recommended weight restrictions for Your vehicle (normally 60-100kg.) I have converted my factory fitted roof bars to rails to accommodate the extra weight.

Really gets down to what You want to achieve, a bit of light luggage & an awning the alloy should be fine. A spare tyre a couple of jerry cans a gas bottle etc. steel will serve You a lot better.

Mike.
