Well, what a day. Travelled from Blackall to Quilpie via Adavale. Whatever you do, don't go that way. Was assured at Blackall Visitors Information Centre that although the road was dirt it was a piece of cake. Yeah. Mostly rocks and corragations all the way.
Todays experience, has left me a bit apprehensive about going out to Birdsville. Can anyone tell me how much black top I will have, from Windorah to Bedourie and then to Birdsville. Is it worth the extra 150ks to go this way or should I bite the bullet and go directly to Birdsville from Windorah ?
Well I am not going to tell you as all roads out there in the out back can be how you do and that what makes it worth doing, toget away from everybody to be with people who want to be there.
Down the track you will say I did that trip but remember to smile and say what a great trip it was. Ralph
I guess you remember some of the dirt roads we travelled. Well not a patch on the one today. 300ks of rock and corragations. We are going out to the mine tomorrow for a couple of weeks and even that will be a piece of cake after today (a mere 70ks.) I'll check in the morning to see if the tyres are still up and there are no vital fluids escaping or the van lopsided. Love to you and Billeeeeeee. Have a great time out west.
I suggest straight to Birdsville because they do a fair bit of road maintenance just before the influx of visitors. You have a better chance of reasonable dirt conditions. Last year, I recall about 260 k of dirt both ways on the direct route. Road conditions were starting to deteriorate quite a lot a couple of days after the races. I have good stone protection on the front of the van and kept the speed down to about 80 KPH and had few issues, apart from the dust.

I am driving a Transit Van and whilst it is quite sturdy and has good ground clearances it is not an off road vehicle and nor does it have 4x4 tyres. After yesterday's effort it seems to have survived OK. Bad chip in windscreen from about the only other car on the road.
I guess what I'm asking is the other road through Bedourie any better? We are not going for the races though I expect we will go for a look see. We will have a market stall and be hanging around there. So if anyone wants some beautiful opal and you happen to be there, come and see us.
Well have made it to Birdsville. Bit the bullet and went the direct route.
Can say that the road is nowhere near as bad as the one above. It rained all the way and this created boggy patches & the traction control light kept blinking on, but all in all good for a dirt road. Some corrugation and stoney patches but not for long. We travelled at around 60ph. Small teasing streaches of tar mainly over the sandhills which was great. I probably would have slid back down without them.
Any how we are here for a week and then probably heading down to Innaminka (Spelling?) and then through Cameron Corner and back to Eromanga for a few more weeks. That's the plan anyway. If theres anyone around we are at the free camp. The kettles on.
Hi Mel, on the way back from Cameron Corner there's a free camp opposite the Noccundra Pub on the Wilson River (was just a series of water holes when I was there five years ago with Ontos45 and Sue, don't know if that's the case at the moment with the drought). Nice pub with good meals, but it will be under new management as the owner at that time has since passed away. Glad to see you're back on the road.
Cheers, Joe

What do you think Jules. In fact, for about half an hour everyone on the road got to listen to her. The button on the 2way was jammed on. Must of got some dust in it. Norm had to pull over and tell me about it. When we pulled over at Betoota for a cuppa, there were remarks from other travellers. Apologies were quickly extended.
