Fuel availability between broken hill and mildura

Hi.

I am wondering if Petrol is available on the drive from broken hill down to Mildura, or must one carry own?

Hi Keiron,

Its a good road to travel tow the van. Wentworth has fuel. A good map will indicate fuel + Food + beds etc. nice drive We liked it.

we drove this route about 3 months ago. Cant remember ever thinking about fuel - so there must have been enough for me to not worry (but I do carry 40 litres of spare fuel just in case). I am a bit gun shy of buying diesel from old, shonky servos - you don't know how much dirt and water might be in it. If in doubt, I use my spare diesel ad fill up in a major town or city or wherever I feel the fuel is likely to be OK (like a busy roadhouse)

It is only about 300kms from Broken Hill to Mildura. I would not have thought you needed to refuel over that distance.

Do not rely on fuel at Coombah - half way between Broken Hill and Wentworth. Go thru there every other year. Time before last the power was off and the generaror was out of fuel. Had to spyhon enough fuel out of a vehicle to start the geneartor to get fuel to keep the generator going to fill all the vehicles up again.

Thanks .

I am running a 4.8 litre Petrol Nissan Patrol, pulling around 2 toone.

With the economy these things give it almost uses half a tank just to leave the servo, so to speak. They can be verrrryyyyyyy thirsty.

The Hay Plains, year before last, heading west to east, I averaged 29 litres per 100 kilometres. Just over 3 k's per Litre.

Only have 95 litre tank, and can not use it all.

But thanks for the happy tales on your confident economy experiences.

Thank you all for your comments.

I deduce from them all, that if I travel slowly, I should be OK. But I will carry 1 can, just-in-case.

Cheers all, and travel good. KB

Blimey Kieron my western star truck at 45.5 tonne gets 2.2 k per litre
mind you my 2005, 4.2 diesel patrol ute towing our 24 ft fifth wheeler only gets 6.25 k per litre
That's 16 L per 100 k in other talk

It' around 260k from BH to Wentworth.

I used to do Wentworth , Lake Tandau , Menindee , Wilcannia  regularly.

Plus th Hill to Mildura , never found it "a battle" , at least not like some of

the winds you can get on th Barrier. At least doing th 80 you won't hold

anyone up on that road. Safe trip.

Coombah roadhouse was up & running when we came through not too ago. No problems with fuel availability. Have a read of this link, particularly the last few paragraphs.

Sheittt, keiron!!  I'd be looking for a new tug!!  My unit is a 1994 Landcruiser 4L Diesel, towing about 3tonne averaging 14.5L per 100 km ..... when nothing on tow we average 9L to 100. ......... with 140 litres in the two tanks haven't had any hassles yet after having travelled over 250,000 Km .... both city and bush travel.

I lived at Broken Hill until recently. At the times I travelled I found Coombah was more often closed than open and you could not rely upon Wentworth being open after 7pm. Coombah may be better under new ownership but best tip is to make sure you have range enough to cover the 300 km from Mildura/Buronga (260 km from Wentworth) before heading out. Note there is significant wildlife on this road and to drive at night is as bad as I have seen anywhere. During the day it is pretty good as the goats are smart and generally stay off the road. There are occasional eagles feasting on the roadkill and emus to keep you on your toes but you can see them easily enough. However it is different matter from dusk to dawn when the roos and sheep are everywhere. Many locals will sleep in Wentworth if unable to get to the Hill before dark just to avoid the collision damage.
