ADDS, BUGGA 'EM

Hi all,

Anyone else notice the amount of adds creeping into various social media lately?  I use "Google Calendar" like a diary, have done for quite a few years now but only recently have been getting flooded by adds, bugga 'em.

That's for true.  I watch a lot of you tube and when I was in Canada I didn't mind the adds so much. There were adds for drugs that were unintrusive  infomercials that had stuff it was usefull to know. There was another one where a lady solicitiously invites a raccoon to come in the front door - an add for eyeglasses. I never got sick of it.

Once I came back and you tube picked up a new IP I started getting the "It's fair dinkum because it's Aussie" crap copy from the talentless local add industry even on a 3 minute clip. AdBlock Plus - no more adds. I have my system locked down pretty tight so one way and another I dont even notice the adds that do sneak through.

Whilst it isn't WWW adds, Windows apps tend to be naggy and constantly begging for attention / money. Linux is the answer to that situation.

It is a symbiosis where the host has the choice with a bit of effort to block the adds. A smart industry makes sure it doesn't get aggravating enough to motivate the audience to crowbar their message.

As on TV & radio, advertising keeps a lot of sites afloat. Even government sites like the weather, BOM. As with everything else these days it comes down to money. It is annoying though.

I was using Google Chrome as one of the browsers. Always getting pop up ads and malware. No more problem since I deleted Google Chrome.. I use Internet Explorer and Firefox now. In the process of installing Windows 10, so waiting to see what's gonna happen to some of my older programs...

I have eliminated all annoying ads. The only ads that appear are those that belong to the website. If you watch catch up tv on your computer, it will also eliminate the ads on commercial TV.

Google Chrome: www.youtube.com/watch

If you are using another browser, search youtube for your browser type.

Cheers,
Naomi

Google is very intrusive, if you sign up for a Google account your going to get bombarded with ads.

Firefox with Adblock Plus https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/   keeps em under control.smile

How good is Firefox I have been a long term user of Google but am not happy about having my data mined, is Firefox as good and as easy to use as google plus.

Hi Rocket,
The ads on this forum have been optimised and are very small in terms of file size … each is 40k or less so they wouldn’t have much effect on download limits.  We made the decision awhile back to pay the subscription cost on this forum to eliminate third party ads which were often inappropriate Viagra or mobile phone dating service-type ads.  The current ads at the top help us to pay our subscription costs and we feel they are more appropriate for our members, and often of interest.

Firefox is a better browser than Google and is much less intrusive.

I experimented with Google some time ago, Firefox is easier to use and far less intrusive, download it and have a play, if it doesn't suit you revert to

Google.smile

I for one certainly don't object to the small and unobtrusive adds that are on our forum as stated there are costs associated with running the forum which have to be met and if it means a few small adds to keep our forum open you have my vote

Agree Cindy I think you have the right mix to cover costs etc. Well done this is a great site IMHO.

The ads on here don't bother me either Cindy, they are all connected with what it's all about.

The ones that do annoy me are when I'm playing Solitaire on my phone. At the end of each game I get 2 or 3 ads popping up.

I asked at the Telstra shop, she said It was because I was playing a free app. If I was playing one I had paid for I wouldn't get any ads.
