In my experience, it depends whether you want the highest light output, or the lowest power consumption.
I reckon the 3528's use around 5-6 watts per metre, and 5050's can use up to about 15 watts per metre.
I'm guessing light output would be very similar, depending on warm white or cool white or even daylight?
Just get some cheap ones of both sorts from eBay, and do a comparison yourself. You will use them anyway.
PS: No expert here!!
Are these strip lights waterproof as I have been thinking about replacing my external van light with them as any one of them will surely give more light and use less power than the current light.

Just so you are aware guys.... The "waterproof" strip LED you can get Flea Bay on whilst "waterproof" are not UV stable. The strip lighting was originally designed for fridge lighting, so, ask yourself, how much sun light does the inside of a see???
LED's are designed to disapate any heat from their surface, the silicone covering on the self adhesive strip lighting stops that from happening. But in a Fridge system it's cooled by the Fridge so it doesn't matter. When exposed to sunlight this type of strip lighting starts to yellow, the next stage it will become brittle and eventually break. If you want to use this type of lighting, I'd recommend putting it on a stick and put it up when you need it and keep it out of sunlight both direct and indirect. Doing this will make it last a lot longer.
How many watts they use will depend on how many SMD's there are per meter, here's some examples.
Emitter Type: SMD 3528 LED Total Emitters: 60 per metre (300 per 5mt roll) Rated Voltage: DC 12V 4.3 Watts P/Mt - 21.5 Watts P/Roll Length Per Roll: 5mt
Emitter Type: SMD 5050 LED Total Emitters: 60 per metre (300 per 5mt roll) Rated Voltage: DC 12V 13 Watts P/Mt - 65 Watts P/Roll
Emitter Type: SMD 5630 LED Total Emitters: 60 per metre (300 per 5mt roll) Rated Voltage: DC 12V 18 Watts P/Mt - 90 Watts P/Roll
In terms of brightness, the 5050's are 3 times brighter than the 3528's and the 5630's are about 3 times brighter than the 5050's.
Pure White is a nice white light whereas Cool White has a slight blue tinge. Warm White is actually Pure White with a yellow lens across the surface.

aussietraveller, in all honesty you'd be better off converting your existing awning light to LED rather than relacing it, if you want some help with that PM me and I can point you in the right direction.

Hey Brian, I sort of missed that point and was trying more to point out that it's not UV stable etc...
But for a direct answer to Sarg's question, SMD for SMD the 5050's are 3 times brighter than the 3528's. So, 300 x 5050's (1 - 5mt Roll 60 SMD's per Mt) power consumption would be 13 Watts per meter or 65 Watts per 5mt Roll and would still be one third brighter than 600 x 3528's (1 - 5mt Roll 120 SMD's per Mt) which would use 8.6 Watts per meter or 43 Watts per Roll.
