Çhageing Suspension type on my Avan

I am looking at replacing the present Alko Suspension on my Avan Cruiseliner. Fitting conventional eliptical leaf springs and an axle. This will raise the van approximately 120 mm which is desirable , and the the leaf spring suspension will be an improvement on the present system, on dirt roads. I am in contact with a fellow Avanner who has done this modification and is rapped with the difference. This is no problem to do for me, as I have been in the engineering field all my working life, that includes trailer building at one time. Looked at trailing arm suspension systems but they will require more chassis mods or will raise the van too high. I live in Perth W.A. (although in Cooktown Qld at present ) . l what I would like to find out is what is the paper trail I need to follow in W.A. to do this mod. Anyone done something like this in WA with any advice would be appreciated. Do I need to get the van reregistered ! Etc. regards Mike

The June 2014 copy of the Avan club newsletter carried details of exactly what you propose. If you have not seen the article this dude below knows all about it, although possibly you have..

Yes I am in contact with Jim who wrote the article, It's the WA requirements re doing this job that I am looking into. Do I need an engineers report, etc. before doing the job . All that sort of info for W A requirements. thanks Mike

Every time we take our Avan caravan on a decent stretch of unmade road the cupboards & draws spring open, the ceiling lights fall out & end up hanging by the wiring & we find numerous screws rolling around on the floor.
Good luck with your adventures off the bitumen.

Mike - had a look at WA Transport and this page came up as top result when searching for "caravan modifications" in WA Transports search engine. It covers suspension.

http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/modify-a-light-vehicle.asp

Hope it helps.
