HOW DOES THE OTHER HALF DO IT?

Just had a couple or three days in Perth with a family member that works at the Crown Casino.

We went in with him on Monday morning for a guided tour of the facility; to walk in at 9.00am monday & see so many people of all ages & nationality's playing pokies was unbelievable; along with many other games that ive never heard of let alone seen. The mind does boggle.

Then caught a bus into the city for a few hrs & back by knock off time for the young gun; yes he's still very young & now up to training floor staff & observing their performance's.

There's a staff of 5,000, not all under his control.

This was followed by a couple of drinks & dinner; his shout so thanks John.

What an eye opener.

JC.

Hi Mr & Mrs JC,

Hope that's all, (eyes wide open) and the wallet shut tight. The house allways  wins. They have to pay the salries of 5000 first.

Regards Jim & Lambie

When the Crown at Melbourne first opened I went in for a look. Signed up as a member (basically a frequent flyers club for gamblers). Put my card in a pokie and proceeded to play. After about an hour or two and bored out of my brain, I had about 80 points. Then as I was walking around, I could see people with 200,000 + points. How much money & time was put into that?

People who go to casinos etc., are often on some sort of benefit or pension, not workers. Was told by a woman in her 70's once while having coffee at Melbourne casino, that it was cheaper for her to spend the day there, than at home, the casino, or club, is heated or cooled, can get free coffee, food, soft drinks, keeps the power bills down at home. Membership cards accrue points, and these can be used for food and drink. So that is one side of it.

Agree. Saw a TV item on Bingo recently. Most of the older people lived alone, had allocated themselves a small amount for the day's activity and were there for social contact, tea & coffee, heating or cooling.

Take a look at the Casino buildings, fittings, landscaping etc. and ask yourself, "did they get the money to build from the winners or the losers?".

Listening to the ABC radio the other day, reported that Coffs Harbour had over 900 poker machines each averaging over $500,000 profit each year!!!!

I've been to a couple. Every time I went with a couple of mates, and at the end of the night, after playing different tables, having a meal, and a number of drinks we'd come out pretty close to even for the night. So the meals, drinks and 3 or 4 hours of a bit of fun cost us between $20.00 to a couple of times coming out ahead. I enjoyed it anyway.

Virtually every time we visit a sports club or any some sort club with gambling it is very obvious that 90 plus % of the patrons are Senior Citizens. Be it during the day or for a evening meal etc.
Naturally our 3 sons and their families like all of the younger brigade are working or at home for the evening meal and bedtime for the G.Kids.
I am amazed at the disposal income... yes I guess that it is "disposal" given away to the clubs etc.
We visited the club scene about 3 to 5 times a year. Mainly to meet friends for lunch or dinner. $5 is my limit on the pokies. If I can not hit the jackpot with $5, I leave the rest in my hip pocket.
We are a nation of gamblers, and you just have to look at the way sporting betting has exploded of late.
My old Pappy use to say, " the best way to bet is to take your money out of one pocket and put ii in the other. You can never loose. God bless the old man.

Ever heard of money laundering, converting dirty money into "clean",

Much of this occurs in such places.

Gday...

The figures were out for Victorian pokie usage for FY 2014-2015 recently.

The Baw Baw Shire, in South Gippsland, has 198 pokies in total. Last FY $13,290,000 went through (lost to) those 198 pokies.

That is $255,000 each and every week - $36,500 each and every day .... or $184 through each poker machine every day of every week of 2014-2015 FY.

It is mind boggling. cry no hmm

This is the Baw Baw Shire area -

If you think you can beat the pokies you are seriously deluded and it's not the rich putting all those millions into the machines it's those who really can't afford it, and I also think it's quite probable that Packer does pick up a lot of dole and pension money.

Glad you enjoyed your day there Jim & Leonie, good idea catching a bus into Perth to while away the time.   One sad thing about Perth is the three picture theatres that were in the city proper are now closed and as far as I am aware there is none in there now, although one may be on the other side of the railway line in Northbridge, but not sure about that.   Otherwise only in the suburbs now.

I was in the city on Monday hoping to see a movie without success, I did enjoy breakfast at Miss Mauds in one of the arcades though.

Interesting looking at 2 recent surveys. In the pokies stakes, a hotel in Wendouree was ranked #2 in the Ballarat area for pokie turnover. A few days earlier Wendouree rated as one of the most depressed suburbs in Australia. Figures are a bit skewed as the pub in Wendouree is the only gambling venue in a big area and the depressed part of Wendouree is only a small area but it doesn't look good.
