Travelling with cats

We are going to embark on our big adventure in the next few months and have 2 cats - our girls.  Any suggestions would be welcome with respect to tips on travelling with them.  They're both house cats and are used to being inside, both are neutered and are 3 years old.  I'm wondering what's best for them - travel in the vehicle or van?  I suppose it's an individual thing but I'm wondering what you people out there do???

We are about to do the same thing ...in about 10 days time.

Two cats ...both ex boys..1 4 the other 2..and both inside except when we are home where they are let out for an hour or two. We have come up with a cat travel house for both of them together ...big enough to fit in between the seats in our Nissan Patrol...with an end window so they can look out the back door window. Both will wear a harness....and while one will lead well...the other is not so well. We expect that they will mostly stay in the van when parked up ....going outside on the lead at other times.

Is gunna be an interesting learning curve for all of us I reckon............

Cheers  Keith

Gosh everyone, I wish you well with your feline adventures. It is hard enough with dogs, but cats are so independent, good luck!

Cheers, Robyn

I think Keith's idea is a good one. Ran a cattery for 7 years and being alone in the van might not be a good idea. In the vehicle they should be contained as you would not want to stop for petrol and have them escape.

Like I said on your other post, I am in the same situation. Think I will start by taking her for short rides around the block and hopefully she will get used to it.

Hi Keith

I'd be interested in seeing what contraption you've come up with.

Cheers and good luck!

Thanks all for the comments. Yes, harnesses are a must especially for our calico - she's quite adventurous at times when let outside our home.

Hi, god luck in your travels, have you travelled much with them in the past? Our cat gets terribly car sick poor girl. Her last trip from Melbourne to here in Kerang was terrible for her.
i hope your furkids travel well and good on you for taking them with you.

It is a travel cage/enclosure that is available from Petbarn.....about 180 bux(?) I think. Will be big enough for them to move about with a small bed in there as well. Not sure if we will put a cat scratch tray in there yet...but will have one on board...as we intend to stop every cuppla hours anyway.

Like I said earlier...will be a steep learning curve for all of us ...confusesmile..

On pondering this a bit more...looks like the cats will have better accommodation than us....and some would say that's as it should be .

Cheers  Keith

We have two cats travelling with us, and they travel with us in the car during the day time (on harnesses), and sleep in the caravan with us at night. They were indoors cats to start with, but have taken to travelling very well. We have a cat scratching toy inside the caravan, and they seem to take their frustrations out on that.

They love the car, especially on hot days, when the air conditioner is on in the car.

Hi everyone,

I had hoped to start some adventures on 20th April from Port Stephens with my 3-year-old cat, Tanzi. But the big storm which hit the area that day put a sudden halt to any plans and we've been "grounded" ever since waiting for insurers and trades to complete the necessary repair work. So our travels will only start in the near future and bigger laps next year, hopefully. As my cat hasn't travelled with me before, I'd like to know if most dog friendly places accept cats too. Tanzi loves being in the campervan and seems to enjoy the short drives we take around the area from time to time. I have a good harness and lead and recently found a great pet seat belt attachment (attached pic) which makes her much safer while we're on the move. For anyone interested they're available here: http://www.custompetcollars.com.au/collections/frontpage/products/pet-seatbelt-harness-tether

Happy days,
Grandos.

Hi grandos, I would be very surprised if dog friendly places didn't welcome cats. We have had lots of dogs stay with us since we bought our park, both with their owners in vans, plus staying inside our pet friendly cabins. We haven't had a cat stay yet, but did have a parrot a few days ago. Met a solo lady on my travels in 2013 who travelled with a dog, cat and a duck!

Hi Hokianqa,

Your park looks and sounds great ... thanks!  I look forward to visiting in the not-too-distant future.  Love the dog, cat and duck one!   aww

Thanks Grandos, we love it here and it's great meeting the variety of dogs coming through. The off leash area will slowly be improved with some shade trees and maybe some agility ramps when we get time and funds, but that is probably a next year job. Happy travels.
