Hi John.
Mine has been like that for two years, without replacing it just leave it as is,until it goes altogether, what has happened is the Aussie traveler rails that hook on the van and the other end into the roller haven't been lined up properly with the roof awning and that is the result,I bought my van second hand and it was already like it,but she still works
Our AE Dometic Awning replaced 4 yrs ago and worse than the original which was replaced at 8 yrs old and even the newer Barrel is a lot weaker as it had Bend in it along the Full Length from Day one, a bit late now but should have phoned Dometic as I have been Lucky with them as far as our Truma Hot Water systems have gone with Full Replacement and No Charge. It has really crappy Vinyl and Stitching so will replacing with a better quality Vinyl or purchase or later if damaged by insurance with a Aussie Traveller Brand as they appear to have Stronger arms, Fittings and Better Quality Vinyl.

Hi, early last year my awning took a beaten in a storm causing a lot of damage to the vinyl. At first I thought I would cut the material off but counting to ten thought different.
Into a hardware store purchased a roll of good water proof material tape carefully after cleaning the area right along where the vinyl is connected to the caravan and taped it, the leading edge of the vinyl was torn or shredded so repaired it to a point where about 3000 ks later when we were home we had vinyl replaced. The other thing I might suggest is go to a cheap shop and get super glue run some along the tear remember to put the opened tube in the frig for later if you may need it this may stop the tear running.
As we were travelling I thought any moment it would let go forcing me to cut it off and to our surprise in the days of rain that followed it did not let water in. Now I carry a roll of this tape for emergencies.
I don't really know Radar, what the cost of an awning is but I expect is would be in excess of 200 dollars and if you have a quick calculation as to how much you have paid in premiums for van insurance over the years then I think one would be foolish not to make a claim.
