It is always interesting and unsurprising that a competition on the forum draws new members like a fly to ................. honey. OI what did ya think I woz gonna say?
I should have written down the number of members at the opening of the competition and note the increase by end of tomorrow.
Anyway, welcome to all the newbies - please stay around and participate in an ongoing way and not just blow in and blow away.
cheers - John

John I suspect that a significant number of these new members were actually people who watch the forum and follow topics without actually joining the forum, that is until something like a photo comp comes around and like me they submit some of their snaps of which they are proud.
Like you I hope they stay around after the competition and help our great forum to continue to grow through their contributions.

The only way to correctly test your theory is to also then look at how many new members in the time frame also enter this competition as I presume, like me not all new members have or intend to enter. Also of interest then would be how many of the total membership who do not post regularly on the forum have entered the competition.
Yes I joined when the photo competition started. But the main thing is I want to share my travelling photos as we have been travelling since 2009.
I have also been a guest with the GreyNomads.com.au for a few years & I have like the Grey Nomad facebook page for a few year now and a member for the classified for looking for jobs. But it seem you had to join again for the forums as its separate.
Dont worry I will be sticking around as there are some great stories and people here.
Thank you Lee-Ann, I also am a member for probably a year now (who keeps tabs??) and I visit the site and forum everyday usually for half an hour. Like you, I too wanted to share my travelling photos as I believe it is a great way to show people just what a wonderful country in which we have the privilege of living. Therefore I have spent a great deal more constructive time observing others' photo memories as well as posting. I have also contributed to letters to the editor, articles, and the forum. There are some interesting people out there.
cheers,
Robyn
its interesting that so many people have been using this Forum for so long and contributed little or nothing back - which is pretty sad as the more posts and comments, the more dynamic and interesting the Forum becomes.
The Forum has been pretty slow and often boring for about the last year now.
We're in a CP and last night sitting round the campfire I asked how many knew about Grey Nomads. Most did, most read the posts and very few had posted and commented. None of them had a good reason for not - all of them could remember my avatar (no - none got up and walked off in disgust lol).
They accepted that even brand new members had things to contribute to us with ideas/observations and also questions.
If youre a lurker - please at least comment on other peoples posts if you cant come up with a post of your own. We wont rip your head off and if youre new, you'll get a personal greeting from...........traaa daaa....the Forums "Chief of Cheer" !! (gotcha Doug lol)

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
I noticed the other day while scrolling through the photo competition, some usernames I'd never heard of before. So I clicked on their profile to see who they were, to find they had only joined that day or a few days earlier..
If they have been visitors for some time we would have welcomed them on to the forum to chat, have a say or have an opinion.
It would save you all having to read posts from the two proud posters, The Master and The Chief of Cheer. They do seem to post an awful lot, don't they?
I am only new to this forum Sheba. So I am taking my time exploring this wonderful site. As I had some great photos so I thought why not enter the Light competiton. Dont worry I will be sharing lots of photos in the "Sharing Photos' thread in the near future.
I am amazed how precious people are becoming about the forum, read through this thread and it is not very welcoming for new people.
I like to think of the forum like a market, some people have been here for a while and have set up stalls, other people just wander through and have a look, some might stay some might even set up their own stall, regardless of how people use the forum I believe all should be welcome.
There are a few people on the forum who put a lot of effort into welcoming new people, and that is great. I remember how welcoming the forum was when I first arrived, and I really appreciated it.
Please folks don't give the new people a hard time, even if their motivation to move from lurker to member was a photo competition.

Hmmm we got booed out of the local bowlo the first time we went to the Sunday raffles and won 3 prizes... Didn't bother me, I bought tickets and they had exactly the same chance as everyone elses tickets.

Cindy should make it a rule you have to be a member of the forum for 8 years before you can enter the competition that would give me a chance of wining .

Totally agree brickies, that would give ONLY a few of us a chance of winning. What annoys me are the ones joining the same day as they post a photo, and it's half way through the time frame of the competition. I gave up when I saw that happening.
