CAMP HOST REQUIRED - MONTO
One of the great things about travelling around this country is the opportunity to put the roots down for a while and have a break off the road. Sometimes this comes in the form of a paid job or as a volunteer position either short or long term. As you are aware Monto business community has set up a 72 hour low cost campsite by leasing land right at the end of the main street and you can now stay there for $5 per head per night to help pay for the l...ease and council rates. Now the town needs our help and is looking for a camp host who in return for minimal duties will receive a free campsite, water, toilet and power. If you are interested contact John MacElroy at Monto Newsagency, 33 Newton St Monto or phone 07 4166 1534 for all the details.
Monto has done this for us, lets see if we can do something for them. Please share with your friends.
I only wish that we were on the road and able to make a contribution, but unfortunately it isn't so for the time being. Towns that make the effort to encourage travellers really do need to be supported. Hopefully, someone will step in and fill the vacancy, Monto is a lovely friendly town, have only been there once but would like to return one day. Stay safe.....
Notice there is free power to caretaker. I recently canned a trip to Monto because of bad reviews of the only in-town caravan park I could find; and the one at Cania Gorge was 35km from the town. Does anyone know if this camp at the end of Newton street has powered sites? I am willing, of course, to pay. I was born at Monto but have not been there for many years. Have no living relatives there but have brother and sister in cemeteries and intended visting them.
This is a new initiative by the Monto township Kev. You could ring the number in the statement I put up below to find out what they provide to the traveller. As you can see there is a small charge.
I have day parked in that same spot while staying out at Wuruma Dam. Came in for shopping etc. That was last year.
What a great place Monto is. I was there with a few other GNs and a lot of other volunteers for 6 weeks helping with Blaze Aid.
This town is so friendly and helpful to everyone and needs our support. I for one will make it a point to return there.
If they need a hand when I'm there, I will give some of my time for sure. It's another town realising how important we GNs are to them.
Since my last post have spoken to John MacElroy re this camp. He says it has been very beneficial to the town. It is for self-contained units only. No power, no showers, but new public toilet is at the entrance to the park area. They have a caretaker starting next week until December. John said the project began because of dissatisfaction with the commercial caravan park in the town, but that park has very recently changed hands and is being refurbished. Sites there are or will be $25 a night (you would need to confirm that with the commercial park, of course). John said some caravanners complain at at the $5 per person fee at the self-contained camp but they have to pay rates, a lease etc.

Thanks for that info Kev. I will happily pay $5 when I come through later in the year. It's a great little stop over for stocking up. If needing power, always easy to pop into the caravan park for one night, but most of us are self sufficient these days.
It mind blowing that there is people not prepared to pay $5 to stay in a town , We here member wanting cheap overnight stopover and when a community does so they don't want to pay
