Gday all. We are new members and also new to caravanning. Kim and I are taking a "gap" year to go exploring after my recent redundancy. We are currently at Hervey bay and will be heading for Alice. As the Donohue highway would save us a lot of k's and time can anyone please give us some information about the road conditions and possible difficulties involved in taking this route. Cheers. K & K.
The route from Boulia west is unsealed, basically from turnoff at Boulia through to just about Gemtree. Condition varies wildly from year to year - maybe ask on Exploroz forum or Caravaners Forum. When we did it, the Qld side was fairly sandy, especially through the Georgina River channels. NT side was firm gravel raod but corrugated in parts.
Fuel available at Boulia and Gemtree. Tobermory has run a tourist operation - campground, fuel etc - at times, but it was shut for a while. I think it reopened. Others may know current status. Fuel may be available at Jervois and Hartz Range.
Very nice campground at Gemtree.
