My Nissan Patrol still has a tape deck in it ...along with a CD player and am/fm Radio....and it all still works well. Only catch is to rewind tapes right through if they haven't been played for a while...and then they are good to go.
I remember when Cassette tapes were the new technology, and we didn't believe they'd be any good because the narrower dimensions of the tape meant that they wouldn't be able to hold as much information as the old reel to reel, and hence a reduced sound quality. Of course better magnetic material on the tape, and better recording heads made that theory nonsense. Now I can fit in excess of 250 hours of CD quality music on something as small as your thumbnail.
