New dump point at Karratha WA

A new dump point has been installed in Karratha, Western Australia, located on North West Coastal Highway near the intersection with De Witt Road. De Witt Rd is the main entrance to Karratha off North West H/way. There's an information bay near the T junction.

Not before time either. They are now realising that tourists are money.

Hi Neil. Don't think they've quite worked it out yet even though Chevron have announced they are closing down their gas hub there in about 6-7 yrs. Then Karratha will be a ghost town with a small amount of iron ore coming through it......oh.....and nomads with the CPs and businesses queuing up to beg and grovel - will be a huge change. Was there for 3 weeks late last year and so many small businesses were up for sale - the contracting type and lots of empty shops.
A mate of mine rented a new 2 bd/rm unit in a block of four and its costing him $400 a week, which includes power, water and gas - cheaper than Perth !!!

All those empty wharves down at the gas hub will be neat for us nomads to fish off. No doubt in their sudden rush to get our business, the 3 CPs in town will put on complimentary buses to the wharves and even gut and fillet the fish.

What.......was this all a bad dream LOL

Hi Bruce,
A small correction regards 'Chevron gas hub', Chevron do not have a gas hub in Karratha, the KPG [ Karratha Gas Plant' ] has four partners, Woodside being the major share holder, this plant is still good for another 25 years with on going shutdowns during this time.

Pluto, commissioned in 2011, has a life of 30 years plus, as well as provision for another 'Train' once they find more gas offshore, there is no wharf/jetty being vacated in the next 25 years.

I worked on Pluto for 2.5 years and the first train @ the KPG some 30 years ago.

Karratha is in dire straits at the moment due mainly to the retrenchments courtesy of Rio Tinto re/iron ore price, there is currently another high rise being built for units and shops, which seems over ambitious give 30% of units/houses are empty.

Another small correction, Dampier/Karratha/Cape Lambert, is the second largest export port in the world in regards to iron ore, the largest is Port Hedland, BHP/Fortescue/Atlas iron etc.ect.

Third Largest is Vale of Brazil, cheers

Peter
