Scenic rim area with caravan

we are coming from SA up through to Stanthorpe to Sunshine Coast but want to sTay about a week in the scenic rim area. Don't know the area at all how is it towing a van here , we thought me may stay in two different areas and then do day trips out any suggestions of how best to do this .

Boonah would be a good starting point. From Warwick come down Cunningham Gap steep drop but good road to Aratula then turn off the highway to Boonah , You can stay at the Boonah Showgrounds then you can plan the rest of your stay from there

Rathdowney show grounds also available. Bit closer to Lamington Plateau etc

Another vote for the Boonah Showgrounds.
Handy town for eating out, coffee, etc.
A hidden gem is the Roadvale Motorcycle Museum.
All sorts of machinery & displays.
Only open on Sundays.
Take the road to Peak Crossing/Ipswich. Look for the sign on the left to Roadvale & Museum about 5 minutes out of Boonah.
Kalbar Showgrounds is also good. Small town 10 minutes from Boonah or Aratula.
So much to see in the area. Good tourist info center on the road into Boonah.

I would still think your first port of call is Boonah it is the headquarters of the Scenic Rim and easy access from the Cunningham HYW , To visit the Lamington Plateau from Boonah you would go via Beauderest which is 39 klm from Boonah and 31 klm from Rathdowney to Beaudesert , And I do feel Rathdowney is not very central but is a nice place to visit .

Oh, while at Stanthorpe there is a good free camp at Dalveen.
On the northern end of the vineyard areas.
Handy to unhitch and do the wineries, brewery and cheese factory.
Some places have car parks too small to turn a 'van around in.
Personal choice..Castle Glen Winery. Huge choice of tasty treats.

Boonah to Tamborine Mountian is 77 klm about one hours drive and is an easy day trip without dragging the van from place to place

Tamborine Mountain would not be a good place to take a van as in many spots parking is hard to access much better to take the car.
The Scenic Rim has many lovely free or low cost camping spots.
A nice day trip is to travel via Lions Road and return via MT Lindsay Highway or visa versa.
Beaudesert is a nice country town to stay in and has a caravan park also Aldi Woolworths and Coles if you need to stock up.
A interesting visit is the Robotic Dairy Farm just south of Beaudesert at Tamrookum 9023 Mount Lindsay Highway visits 10 till 5
Cheers

I agree on Boonah , after you leave Stanthorpe .

Cunninghams gap is a bit like Eagle on the Hill . A bit steep at the top

with 50k bends after a couple of ks not so steep & the corners are 65 to 75 .

you have about 12 k of this . There are some Great camp sights at the beginning

of the Lions Rd near Rathdowney . I drove through there last week - The Lions Rd.

It looked terrific . But it is Not a suitable road to take a van through to Kyogle area .

Use Mt Lindsay Hwy for that . Actually if you are not comfortable with Cunninghams Gap.

You could go to Killarney , Woodenbong to Rathdowney , but it is windy , with 35 - 45k corners.

but the hill is not as steep . I am bringing my tractor through Mt Lindsay later in the week .

A bit longer BUT a Lot quiter . I don't want to be trying to stop a 2ton tractor on a car trailer

in a hurry on th M1 motorway too many dh's.

Enjoy your trip.

I want to use the Caravan reversing camera, have any body experience of its quality etc.

Lots of nice campsites in the scenic rim area. This website will help you choose.

www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/national-parks-and-camping

We towed our van over Cunningham's gap about a month ago. The road has been straightened out and made into 4 lanes and was easy to go over with Caravan in tow.
Have a good time in the Scenic Rim, its a beautiful area. Go up Mt. French at Boonah without the van, the views are wonderful!

We were up that way about 4 years ago and dropped into Boona Showgrounds. Was full of permanents which made the place look a bit shabby and my wife said the toilets were disgusting. I hope it has improved since then. We didn't stay even one night and ended up driving on to Kalbar Showground and were glad we did. It was in a lovely rural setting with hills in the distance and I was the first person to use the brand new toilets. cute little town with a nice pub.

To visit Mt Tamborine we left our van at Cunungra Showground which was fine.

The pics are taken at Kalbar Showground. Hope they still let caravans stay there.

Cheers

Jon

I would look further south as well. Kyogle would be a good spot for the southern and western section. Come east from Tenterfield to Casino and north to Kyogle. There is camping at the show ground. Kyogle is a much closer park to explore around Mt Warning which also should be explored whilst you are sculling around the area.
