On the Road to the (Wild) West

We have finished our house sit at Forbes and the installation of new kitchen at the base camp. Heading to the West to do a couple of house sits in Perth then off to Broome for 6/7 weeks. We are going off the track slightly to take in Wilpenna Pound. Currently at Peterborough (Rest Area) with another 7/8 campers. We have free camped at Cobar (Rest Area) and Spring Hill (Rest Area) about 122 klm east of Broken Hill. This part of NSW and South Australia is currently experiencing rain mostly showers. However the ground is very damp meaning camping conditions  on the red soil are not advisable. Mind you the country has a real green tinge plenty of goats, emus and kangaroos on the road verge enjoying the lush roadside conditions.

We will be making our way to Kimba /Streaky Bay/Head of the Bight as we progress across the Nullarbor and should be in Perth by the end of the month. Anyone doing the great drive across the Nullarbor in the next week should contact us to compare notes and best free camp spots. This will be our 3rd crossing (with van) but still not familiar with all the best stops and opportunities on this treeless plain.

Finished that little trip back to Perth about 3 weeks ago, some of the stops we use are Cohen rest west of Penong, the 81k peg then across the border to Moodini bluff, Baxter rest and the 10mile peg, these last 3 are in WA and have toilets, with Baxter having a dump point. You can get well of the side of the road at the last two as well.

Happy Travels

Paul

We have had 4 crossings. We don't particularly aim for the best camping areas. After all our main objective is to get across with the minimum of fuss. We just us Camps Australia Wide to select a convenient stopover. After all it's just for one night.

Thanks Dodge, gonnaway and PeterD.

We were in the West last year August to Nov. Checked out the South West and then up to Jurien Bay/Pinnicles/Sandy Cape Nat Park and the "Wild" flowers.  Very beautiful part of this great country particular at the time being Sept. We will take our time making our way to the West. Currently parked up at Wilpena Pound National Park all nice and green after recent rain. We will do Smoky Bay (oysters) before having a few days at Streaky Bay then 3/4 days to Norseman. Our house sitting does not start until 4/7 so until then we just enjoy this great land and life style. For those who have enjoyed the Flinders Ranges this is just one of many great destinations in this very big country.
