melb to sydney

In the old days I would leave the boat drive to the city up collins st then left into elizebeth st to victoria st and then into sydney rd which used to be the hume highway.but then sydney rd took me to the m31 freeway and off I went .

My question is whats to stop me doing that now aaat that time of the morning

You can still go that way, but only if you are brave, can handle the traffic, maybe even stupid or a combination of the three.

I'd go straight up King St turn right @ the witches and britches restraint @ William st left into peel st past the vic markets straight on to Royal parade to Sydney road right on to the ring road and then left on the hume freeway.

Or if you want to pay a toll straight on to city link onto the Tullamarine fwy on to the ring road to the hume fwy

I travelled that way to work many times, that was many years ago, if you are determined to go that way I would prefer getting onto Nicholson St and heading north to Bell street then across to Sydney road

Hi ,funny how you think .... I have the reverse problem ! my wife and I would often travel to the northern areas via the Newell hwy on our Harleys and always head back to Melb via the coast to Sydney. Well once we finally had our GPS it was fantastic cause I would simply plug in Melb and the voice in my earpiece would get me thru to the other side of Sydney somehow ! Fair dinkum I would get the shivers when we got near that town ,however I became totally reliant on the voice in my earpiece to get us thru, I mean I did not feel comfortable but I just did as I was told and sure enough we came out the other side .As a Melbourneite I could aid you but when you are driving blind I figure its better to go by the voice in the dash to get you on your way when you don't have a clue and 30 mins later you pass Craigieburn and it really didn't hurt a bit ! Cheers John

I agree with Gundog. I am a Melbourneite too and having said that, there is no way I would go along those roads these days as they are always packed, trams everywhere no matter wheat time of day or night. I would as the kids say "suck it up" and pay the toll, get onto the freeway and onto the Western Ring Road - less stress.

Why not travel towards Geelong and then turn onto the Western Ring Road easier than the Tullermarine and no tolls, the distance is almost the same, look it up on Google Maps.

And trams. And Sydney Road is very narrow.
