Hi Everyone, I have just joined the forum today and also just purchased a van ready for travelling. My question today is we are going to the tennis in Melbourne in January and wanting a caravan park close to public transport may it be bus or train and it doesn't have to be close to the inner city. Can anyone suggest any.
There's a nice Big 4 park at Dandenong on the Dandenong - Frankston Rd at the twin bridges just before you get to Jayco. There is a bus stop right outside the front door and a set of traffic lights to get you in and out. Nice small park that we've used a number of times.
Welcome to the Forum - we look forward to many posts from you and other people new to this site ))
We're currently staying at Akoonah Park (also known as Berwick show grounds to the locals). Been here 4 weeks now. Wet - like the rest of Melbourne. This is a small CP with only 18 sites.
By far the cheapest CP (caravan park) in the city. We pay $126 a week - think it goes up a few $ a night from July.
Toilets/showers, no wash house or kitchen. It is a dedicated CP with town water to each site and power. If you need to use a laundrette, there are two in Berwick (DO NOT use the one in nearby Beaconsfield - dirty and will cost you a fortune.
The Berwick train station is about a 10 min drive from the CP and trains travel into the city every 10-20 mins depending on time of day. Allow about 40 mins to get into the CBD. Then you use a tram if necessary to get where you are going. Remember Melbourne has plenty of toll roads and they are VERY expensive. You need to buy a MyKey card to use on trains and trams. Info centres, buses and rail stations here (if manned - many are not) sell them - get a Seniors card if you qualify. We bought our cards at Mildura Info Centre in NSW !!
Every Sunday there is a market here - huge - buy all your meats and veges and whatever here. The best meat place in the area is Tasman Meats in Berwick. Just ask the camp manager where Tasman Meats is - biggest meat place you will see in a long time. Great quality, great range, great price. Its a large meat and fish boning and packaging company that also has a retail shop.
But in January don't think you will just be able to rock up and get a site. This CP is well known to nomads who return here at varying times each year and of course summer and school holidays its full (January of course).
You will need to book it about 3-4 months ahead. It is on wiki camps. If you cant find the details to contact the friendly manager, private message me for his details.

Crystal Brook caravan park just out of Templestowe, amongst the gum trees and a bus service close by. A very scenic area with Warrandyte just around the corner,Petty's orchard not that far away ,and if you decided to drive about half an hour down the eastern freeway park at the MCG car park cross over the bridge to the tennis centre, while there check out the museum for sport at the MCG.
I might be a bit parochial but it is MELBOURNE we are talking about
We recently stayed at Werribee South CP. Good facilities and reasonable rates. It is on Port Phillip Bay. A bus from the front of the Park to Werribee Station and train into the centre of Melbourne Town.
I would think if you are going to the tennis you would need to be close into Melbourne , I bit extra caravan park fees may pay off to be close to action sometimes the tennis finish very late at night and don't need a long trip home late at night
