Very dangerous, been bitten quite a few times, I am like you I use a lot of ties and once you get bitten you make shore you turn them so it doesn't happen again, nasty little creatures.
Yes they are dangerous little suckers, have seen many bad cuts from them over the years.I used to buy them in boxes of 10,000 for securing cables that would last me two weeks in busy times ,I demanded from all of my staff to cut as close as possible to the locking block and turn the tie to a point where you can't brush them walking past. cheers .Peter.

Having also been bitten,i like to cut them with a box cutter or Stanley knife. Not as convenient but safer, than side cutters. Have been caught with hand or arm in confined spaces.
Stainless Steel Cable Ties are lethal. Really are like a scalpel after being cut off with side cutters. We had to do away with using conventional Plastic type Ties in the food production plant, and use the stainless ones. Our protests about the danger was ignored. You can imagine the results.

There is a special zip tie tool (available from superwozit..Toledo brand) that pulls and tensions the zip tie up ...and cuts it off neatly so there is no sharp protrusion..no good on stainless tho.
Had one now for a few years...but yeah ..in an awkward spot or covered in mud etc ...no bloody good hey.
I was shown by a Radio Tech about 12 yrs ago how to cut with Side Cutters so as to avoid a Sharp edge when cut. Firstly a smaller type Sharp set of side cutters, hold waste to be cut off firm by pulling and then place the Cutters across the Width of the Zip Tie and Snip with a Quick action. This has the tendency to sort of Twist marginally and cut towards the middle of the Tie and leaves a small bluntish point which doesn't appear to cut. I have fitted heaps of Zip Ties with this procedure with good results.
When unable to accomplish this because of tight areas I just use a sharp knife with Caution.
