Unesco and its failings

Kow Towing to UNESCO

Aren"t we so glad they spent time in Aussie trying to find fault with us managing the Barrier Reef. There responsibilities also include promoting peace and eqality and compulsory education for all.Obviously their delegates preferred the relaxing lifestyle provided in aus than carrying out their charter in place like Afguanistan, Syria, Iraq,Russia and numerous other places around the world. They probably are all members of FIFA as well.I wonder if their influence is also recognized in the Amazon.

Greenpuss, woops, peace was caught out lying on the state of the reef by showing dead reef from the Philipines. Most of the green orgs have never been near the reef, and as most Australians live in the southern states, they can tell you lies and get away with it. I live on an island near the reef, and it hasn,t changed in, my perception, in the 40 years I have been fishing here. Don,t trust the green extremists.

Fellas - please check your facts. Did you know UNESCO stands for "United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization"? Without their endorsement of the reef it will become known as "second rate" and visitor numbers will drop accordingly and there goes thousands of jobs in the tourism industry. I support mobs like Greenpeace and whoever wants to stand up and stop our planet being destroyed and I know there are plenty of idiots in those organisations but then the same can be said for our government(s).
Good Luck.

If the green fringe are so good, who do they have to lie blatently to the pubic? The truth would be nice instead of spin and lies. Abbot point is a case in fact. The greenies say its destroying the reef- fact the nearest reef is 50 plus klms away, and the dredge spoil is going to be dumped on land. Dredging spoil has been dumped in Cleveland bay for 70 years, and I have been running a fishing business, successfully for 45 years here. And there is still lovely coral around the island where I live. Greenpuss is a media orginisation with not a lot to do with conservation. Bill

this Is as simle as I see it .

How many tourists to th reef does it take to support a dole bludging greenie.

How many logs do we have to fell to support a dole bludging greenie.

How many tons of mining products does it take to support a dole bludging greenie.

ya might have guessed,I don't know of any greenies that work.

That's the problem with rants. They are too often misinformed and just throwing words into the wind
 for something to do

 interesting

I am 54 and picked up half a dozen dole checks in my lifetime, I am a consevationest for want of a better word or some may say greenie and I stand proud trying to preserve something for the next generation. Have you ever seen clear felling against substainable harvesting. Have you seen the hydro dams in tassie pre green and after green, Ive seen both of them and worked in both industries. Do you really believe the greenies get most of their money off the doll, there is far more invested than that. Like I said before there are radicals on both sides.

cheers

I'm also a supporter of conservationist ideals. I've never collected a cent from the dole in my life. Not everyone who believes that wholesale pillage of natural resources is totally unsustainable is a dole bludging greenie. And just because on the surface things don't appear to be any different than they were 30 or 40 years ago, doesn't mean that all is well. You should have a listen to my brother-in-law ,who has been a professional fisherman all his life, talk about coastal water degradation.

And I'm really surprised this thread hasn't had the bullet at this stage

I am proud to consider myself as a greenie and I take objection to the ill informed and ignorant who constantly criticise those seeking to preserve the natural environment for ours and future generations to enjoy. Imagine, if you will, the state of our land had the greenies not emerged and not protested against the wholesale destruction of our natural wonders in the name of progress. Now its the turn of the Great Barrier Reef to come under scrutiny and its not looking all that good -www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-03/how-healthy-is-the-great-barrier-reef-fact-file/5649810. Many expressing concerns about the long term health of the reef are not just the dole bludging lefty green nutjobs as portrayed by many of the contributors to this thread. Eminent and internationally respected scientists have also been raising concerns based on scientific research by people who actually live in Queensland and some even on the the reef. Personally I will listen to those qualified to give a researched, objective opinion rather than newspaper editors who aren't really qualified to comment on anything.

A lot of the so called scientific experts have vested interests in saying the reef is doomed as their research grants are tied to this. They have to say something bad so as the get funded.I have been a professional fisherman all my adult life, and while population pressure has made a difference, I don,t think its all that bad.We get cyclones every year that damage the coral, and 2 or 3 years later the coral has grown back. It would be nice if a lot of these so called experts have been to the reef and seen how healthy it is. First hand knowledge is way better than views fom afar in ivory towers, and lyeing about it doesn,t help. Bill

I too have similar feelings to Blaze, D&D and 03_Troopy.

Never got one day of dole either.  Always in a job from age 15 1/2 to 57 1/2 when I retired, self funded. Left several years of accumulated full pay sick leave behind too.

I have no time for extremists, either far left (include some Greenies & perhaps parts of RSPCA) or far right (include Abbot & the USA's Tea Party).  Nor do I have much time for many of the UN organisations.  They operate much like the International Olympic Committee and FIFA.  I have had  a good deal of personal interaction with people with long work histories with UN & was very disappointed with their stories of self interest, ineffectiveness, inefficiencies & its Old Boys' culture.

Mind you, when I do those on line political profiling tests I invariably come out as left wing (among the Greenies .. might be a USA based test)

I think if some of you spoke to the (ex) Professional Fisherman in Gladstone they might set our Anti-Greenies straight in Record Time. š³

Hi everyone,
I am closing this thread down now. We do have a 'no politics' rule on this forum and I think this is definitely veering into that territory. Previous experience has taught us that when politics or religion come up, threads often turn negative and personal. Thanks all for your understanding.
