We have had 2 wheel balances , rotated front tyres , wheel alignment and torsion bars adjusted all to no avail , all under warranty . It is booked in again next Tuesday with Iveco , any suggestions .

Take it to a truck aligner (wheel aligner specialising in trucks) for an assessment.

Ditto. Have heard of 'on-car' wheel balancing. But shouldn't have to go to these extremes. Sounds like either it's real finnicky or there's more to it then that.

G'day Mick,

I'll wager one or both of the front tyres are out of round, happened to me on a Ford Falcon some years ago, tyre people blamed everything else. Put the wheel on a balancer and watch the tread. If it dances up and down (only needs to be a couple of mm or so) than that's your problem. At the speeds you have the vibration the tyre rotates concentrically and the hub rotates around in a circle causing the vibration. Can be fixed by truing the tyre on a buffing machine.

Regards,

Tyres should be replaced (under warranty) by dealer - Have dealer do a dynamic balance.

Lift wheel off the ground .. Hold chalk or something just off tyre tread.. Turn wheel and check for roundness ( out of round) had some Dunlops with tread seperation.. Assuming shock absororbers etc are in good nick..
Not a fan on, on hub balancing .. It means the rotors etc are not balanced . If you change or rotate tyres it's not balanced..
Could also be brakes not bedded in properly if it does it under brakes or rotor warped ?
If it's been checked for basic faults ? I'd guess tyres issues ...

Sorry Guy's but everything you have suggested has been done . Tyres balanced and rotated twice , Truck wheel alignment , Continental tyres , had a Electronic Computerised Wheel balance latest technology from Daimler Truck Centre , Brakes - I have mentioned that and got a strange look as if to say we are the mechanics. I am dealing with Iveco Truck Centre Gold Coast who I might say are very helpful and are going out of their way ,
not like the Melbourne Truck Centre who supplied vehicle to Jayco not interested. Still open to comments as I will forward it on to them come Tuesday.
Thanks
mick

I had 1extra leaf put in the springs of my ford ranger and this caused a vibration between 5-10 kmh only . I looked on the ranger forum and they say its a common problem caused by driveline miss alighnment and not to worry. This may be something to consider.

Get the Dealer to swap in a couple of front wheels off a truck that's OK and test on yours.

Is the problem evident at constant speed or mainly coming  down from highway speed. ??? If it's while slowing then look at the dynamic balance of the tyres.

Also get the tyres dismounted and spin the wheels up by themselves to eliminate any problem there ( out of round/balance) and get them to check the shocks are working properly. The Dealers Staff are probably as tee'd off with it as you are but it sounds like they're trying for you.

OK I hear what you are saying,,, it's been checked so you need to start the elimination process.

When it happens I suggest;

make sure power steering fluid is HOT and at correct level, then

1   turn slowly left/right - does it continue to vibrate in the turn?

2   change gear and see if it has any effect - ie change of engine revs (and power steering pump revs) - any change?

3   drive in 3rd or 4th or any lower gear AT THE REVS THAT THE VIBRATION NORMALLY OCCURS and see if it happens - ie eliminate the road speed aspect?

just some thoughts to chase down a not common problem

Ok Goldcoaster I had this trouble on my western star truck wore out two sets of steer tyres ( ten stud aluminium rims ) before finding it don't know if it is the same on your Iveco but I will try to explain it as best I can
On my truck there are lugs to help hold and align the rim and tyre as you refit it, on these lugs is a second tiny lug to Center the rim perfectly, it was only about three ml long but it is actually possible to jam the rim on this little lip and bolt the rim on just that tiny bit off line, how did I find this problem well after pulling it all apart brake drum and all and reassembling it I decided to give the rim and tyre a spin while still up on the jack with a block of wood on the floor beside it and it was wobbling side ways after a few choice words were spoken I removed the wheel and noticed the previously said lugs refitted rim making sure it was on right took it for a drive and hey presto it was vibration free so this is my advice first of all jack up each front wheel and give it a spin with a block next to it and see if it is wobbling sideways

Also to consider if this is not the problem, find out if the king pins are bushes, or bearrings like on the patrol front diff I had this same shaking 20 years ago turns out the patrol has timken bearings top and bottom that were wearing in and allowing it excessive play I had the wheels balanced on the patrol and still didn't fix it but re shimming the bearings did and the old girl is still going today bought it new 23 years ago last December
Good luck hope this help you find the problem

If its a tyre problem then all the balancing; alighnments a whatever will never fix it. Swap the front wheels with two of the rears a see if it still happens. If so then its a couple of new tyres.

Thanks again , I will be showing them all your comments . Mike I have arranged with Beaurepaires to fit 2 front tyres on it when I get it back of Iveco in case the problem is still there. Also they are going to try back tyres on front first before putting new tyres on front. Woody interesting points will pass on. Thanks JC if you can't help what chance have the mechanics lol . Baz will take it out today and try your suggestions , remember it only happens between 95 -100 , so I can only take it for a run up the M1 and not too many bends but I will try lane changing.
cheers
mick

I had a similar issue with my 65c

Turned out that the tail shaft was the cause and due to a manufacturing fault.. manufacturer had tried to balance with a heap of weights.

now repaired properly all smooth..

Had similar issue with some "Sunraysia" style rims and spent a year or so trying to remedy it as per usual. Took the vehicle to a 4WD specialist who is also an accredited truck aligner and they found it was the rims out of true. Apparently a cheap run of imported rims was off loaded to Aust back in the 2008n era and we copped a set of them. New rims with a 5 year mining standard warranty was then purchased for the same unit price as a rim "re-roll" and we have had smooth running for the last two years and 12 15000 k's.
Cheers

Get them to check the drive shaft. It could be out of balance and could cause the problems within the speed range quoted.

Yes a universal joint can cause the shaking at the speed indicated I think from memory that speed indicates the front uni and well worth checking but would be surprised if at 5000 km that would be the case but. Stranger things have happened I should have said this in my previous post but thought it unlikely at such low km also look at the tail shaft as it is possible also that a balance weight has come off it also unlikely but possible one would be looking for two small dots from an electric spot weld on the shaft where the weight was, usually near the uni yoke
Good hunting
Can't wait to hear what is found

Mine had only 3000k on it.
The yoke that connected the tail shaft to the Uni at the gearbox was manufactured out of centre and they had added a lot of weights to try and fix.
Had to have the yoke cut out and a new one welded in then balanced.

cheers

Mike

Well , Got it back after 2 days of more testing, they done most of the above suggestions . They then borrowed 2 wheels to put on the front and it drove ok , so it must be the balancing as the tyres and rims checked out . So of it goes to Beaurepaires again for a wheel balance , still no good , this time they take it to Jax Tyres who have 2 attempts at balancing because they weren't happy with the first attempt , this is what the mechanic told me and YES now it drives like a treat , no Vibration at all . So this tells me their is wheel balances and their is wheel balances , I would hate to think what this would have cost me if it wasn't under warranty , 3 visits and wheel alignment , torsion bars , diff balance and numerous other adjustments checked out. It had 5 wheel balances before they got it right.
Thanks for all the advice.

Great that you have solved the problem and at no cost BUT very inconvenient eh!

How much weight is on the rims and is all together???? Would be interested to know.

Cheers Baz
