Ours are separate totally.

1 tank for drinking water with carbon filter  and 2 tanks for the rest not filtered after its put into tanks.

If we are not filling from a good source we filtr the water before it goes into any tank.

Cheers Baz

Gday...

I have two water tanks, and use either for everything.

I have this on the outside of van, to filter all water that enters the tanks and the van's mains system -

and I then have this on the kitchen tap. It is "three-way" in that it is either unfiltered spray head or unfiltered stream head or filtered through the 'bulbous' filter on the 'side'.

All other taps just use the water straight out of the tanks or from the mains system if in van park.

Been travelling like this for six years and have never got any sort of tummy upset

Cheers - John

Jim, it depends what you put in them. We have a policy of only putting drinking water in them. We are still alive after 25 years of drinking the water from the tanks. If the locals don't drink the water we wait till the next place before replenishing. We also don't run them right down before refilling on a trip.

Regular maintenance also helps. After our long winter trip we drain the tank. When I pull in for the last afternoon tea or lunch stop I remove the plug and drain the tank. When we travel the tank gets the last bit flushed out on LH bends. Whilst the van is being emptied of washing and consumables I replace the plug and refill the tank. I have not had to use chemicals to correct any problems.

Hi Peter & RockyLizard,

Thankyou all,  for sharing with me ,your knowledge.

We will apply The extra tap filter Rocky, And do as you do Peter. I have allways drained the 70lt tank on our camper. BUT left it empty till next trip, which has been long intervals. I was thinking of type of table, to put in the tanks.

We are going to correct this with retirement in 381 days and the new van. Not long to go now.smilesmilesmile

Regards Jim

its generally not regarded as a good idea to leave your tanks empty for long intervals - although others strongly disagree. I keep mine full and dump them on the lawn about every 2-3 months. You can buy chlorine tablets - the chemists ones are very expensive for the amount of water you can treat per pill. You can buy them from caravan shops - theyre about $20 for 10 or so, but one tablet does 200 lt - so you need to break it up. Otherwise, many people use ordinary old chlorine disinfectant you buy in the supermarket. A teaspoon would probably do your tank - put it in with some water and leave for a couple of days. The chlorine will break down, but if it smells strong through the tap (and run all the taps to clean the pipes out), then dump it

Similar for us as well.

I always leave my tanks Full (tight)  when at home, not on the road. Couple of "Miltons Tablets" washed into the tank as I top it up.

Never suffered any ill health from water.  I am a tap water drinker.   Very rarely buy bottled water.

We've only been vanning for the last 3 years (averaging about 10 weeks a year spread out during the year) - bought one of those BCF / Rays filters - used it to both fill the 60lit underfloor tank and to filter the mains water connection in CP's.

Got about 6 months use before the quality fell off rapidly - chucked it and got another one - after 3 thrown out, I decided to investigate the Bacteria Eliminating Silver Technology filter - wow, what a difference, been using it now for about 12 months without water quality dropping off - after each camp, I fully back-flush the filter before storing it in the van (always wrapped in a food grade plastic bag) - they're 6 times dearer, but I reckon 10 times better - when this one is expired, I'll get another one ! Wife won't drink water out of any other filter now !

Bacteria Eliminating Silver Technology  I use the 1 micron cartridge in a standard filter body. It works very well. I don't bother refrigerating it between uses. I have click on hose fittings on the input and output. I have plugged up a couple of hose fittings to snap over the click on fittings to keep the filter full of water (without air) when storing it. I have used it up to 2 years between cartridge replacements.
