We are just going through the upgrade to the GVM from 4495 to 5200 and part of the Safety Certificate process is an updated Weighbridge Ticket to confirm tare weight. The original tare was 3866 which did not take into account the optional extras installed by original owner - 2x80 Solar panels; Bullbar; Vacuum Flush Toilet which replaced original cassette type. Before taking the unit over the weigh bridge today we removed all the contents and also both mattresses, both gas bottles (2x4kg), dinette table, kitchen drawers, heavy duty jack, all freshwater drained - however we did have just under 1/2 tank of diesel. The new tare weight is 4.06t ........ I tend to think the fuel v the additional items we took out (mattresses etc) would have balanced each other out ....... this may give some of you an indication of how your optional extras can do their part in making your motorhome/caravan overweight. These figures just confirmed what we feared - that we would have had major problems and would no doubt have been driving overweight had we not opted to upgrade the GVM. Almost completed the licence upgrade to LR and should be right to register in NSW in 2 weeks. If you are looking for a Weighbridge in the northern NSW area, Lismore has one at the servo at South Lismore on the highway on the left heading into town from the south. Cost is $20 with a Weighbridge Certificate - otherwise it is free ..... open every day - could be a good idea to pop in and check it out - nothing to loose and peace of mind to gain ......... cheers

Hi guys. At least you'll be able to sleep easy knowing you won't get done for overweight, or insurance refusal for payout should the unthinkable happen.
sounds a bit cynical, I know, but if you are making an insurance claim on your RV that's been in a prang - chances are (especially if its a caravan) that it and the contents will be spread all down the road - difficult for the Insurance Co to weigh. I know several people who have been in this situation and one motorhome could have been put on weighbridge, but it didn't happen - the payout was just made.
Its like cars, how carefully does the Ins Assessor go over a car with inspection before approving repairs or replacement looking for some defect like a tyre that might not quite have the right amount of rubber or faulty steering etc.
I wonder if this overweight = no Insurance payout is another urban myth? Be good to hear from anyone who has actually been in this situation

Nothing to do with insurance claim, just recognising a problem when I see one and would not want to push our luck with an assessor or a suspect insurance claim, especially if a fatality was involved .... Both of us spent most of our adult life working in the industry and know better than to risk it!
