9 kg gas bottle refills

Just a query. I have noticed, the last say 6 months, when using iether our gas stove in our motor home or our outside bbq, it seems like I need to increase the volume of gas to get the required temperature. Been using same stove and bbq for over 3 years, so we are used to the appliances.  We have been getting our swaps from Bunnings. Has anybody else noticed this.confuse

if you are doing a bunnings swap , they are only 8 or 8.5 kilo.

they are a smaller gas bottle .

same size at most gas bottle swaps (which is pretty much all of them). If you want to keep your 9kg bottles, you need to get them re-filled. Costs vary wildly, but best seems to be BCF at a few cents under $20. Chat up the guy re-filling the bottle(s) or get the missus to flash her talents and often they really fill them up, rather than shut it down as soon as gas starts to blow out. Cylinders are deliberately designed to be very overfilled, so a little more wont cause your bottles to explode.

yeh sorry about that guys used to have 9kg and got it filled, but now have the smaller bottle. I was more interested in the fact, that it didnt seem to be throwing out the heat as much as it used to.

The hoses are known to deteriorate (internally) over time, have you tried another hose?

You'll probably find that the gas pressure has dropped.  This is controlled and adjusted with the regulator.  Do a google search for a "manometer" they are very easy to make and will enable you to check and adjust the pressure.  Most gas appliances have a test port that you can connect the Manometer to.

Hope this helps

Regards Steve

The 9KG bottle has not changed - it's just that legally they fill them to 8.5KG and have done so for a number of years. Any refiller going over 8.5KG is overfilling which has legal ramifications.
For the facts, not heresay, go to the people who fill the bottles:

good idea Denis. will do. The question was not about the size of the bottle but the content of the bottle. Thanks all for your responses!!!

I have noticed how some different gases don't burn as hot as others. Maybe something to do with the deodorant additive so you can smell it if leaking.

I agree.
I just pulled my Weber Baby Q down and cleaned all the breather inlet, jets and tube because I didn't think it got as hot as it used to.
Definitely a cheaper or lower standard gas being sold. Weber now spotless, & I still can't get it hot enough to crisp pork crackling like it used to.

If you fill the bottle by weight ? In most cases the bottle won't be completely full..

Kiamamam you have got what I have been trying to say. I am going to ask our son he is a gasfitter/plumber and will advise when i get an answer. it has nothing to do with the bottle or the appliances, it is the content of the bottle i reckon.

We have also noticed that some times when we refill bottles they do not have the same heat factor as the previous refill. Also ambient temperature has an effect. the gas burns hotter in warm weather than in cold weather.

@ Bruce and Bev

Your lucky with your $20 refill
Here in Hervey Bay Qld 27 dollars from BCF refill
24 dollars swap at Bunnings

I'm still wandering why caravan's come with a 3 way fridge
If you use it like many of the members do 365 days a year it would
be much cheaper the get another battery and solar pannel fitted

Cheers John

Heat depends on ratio of butane / propane ?

Morning all,

We have a Baby Q, have not found gas quality to be a problem, however the factor I have found that has a major influence on heat output is wind, even a light breeze from the wrong direction will drop the temp by 20 to 30 degrees, have even had the flame blow out on a gusty day.

So, in my experience, if the Baby Q has an Achilles heel it is its susceptibility to wind, not ideal for a BBQ designed to be used in the open air.smile
