Regrets, I've had a few too many.

... But then again, too many to mention.

Frankly, in my life, my way didn't always turn out to be the right way. Recently I got to thinking how many regrets or mistakes a person makes throughout their life. At one regret per week during a 70-year adulthood, that works out to about 3600. In my case that's a conservative estimate.

To put that into perspective, imagine slapping your forehead every second and saying Doh! You'd spend a whole hour at it.

Never regret anything enjoy wot you have

And look forwards not back life is to short

To have regrets they is usually just less

Than brilliant experiences that educate us

Stress less, I'm sure we've all done things we may not have been too proud of.  In my view, it's part of living on planet Earth, we're here to learn, and learn we SURE DO!!

I smile when I see/hear/read people say they have no regrets. Reflecting on my life thus far I, like Doran, have many and wonder how the hell THAT happened. However, agree with dING that one should look forward with optimism.

I've had lots of regrets about things in the past but prefer not to dwell on them and look ahead and try to avoid making the same mistakes again but past mistakes are not worth beating yourself up over.

As the Monty Python songs says, "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" or something like that. smile

I see that bloke that sang that song "Don't worry, Be Happy" topped himself, I wonder what caused him to do that  hmm confuse

We all have regrets..its only when one can't tick them off and move forward they continue to be 'the' problem.....its a matter of balance and perspective...I have a few mates who were top footballers in their day...enjoyed all the ""adulation"" that went with the status...now into their 60's many can barely get out of bed without a fork lifter..arthritic knees, hips, backs, elbows, most get by with their keen senses of humour developed on the field and in the shower rooms...do they regret their playing days?....nup!...not one....they've ticked it off, accept it as part of the total package, and moved on.....its our own choice IMO....I never cared enough about money gathering in the days it was easy to gather....I don't regret it as I may well be dead if I had...its all relative...good question....I wonder if Frank Sinatra really had any regrets...the son of a 'scarlet lady' without a father...he would have to be satisfied he had a fortunate life..and got to hang out of some of the most beautiful women in the world....er I mean hang with........Hoo Roo

We can only do the best we can, with what we have, at the time. Every night you put you head on your pillow to sleep, draw a line in the sand. the past is gone - look forward to tomorrow. if it is a good day -well done. if not, well, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and prepare for the next adventure. life is not a trial run - everyone makes mistakes, that's how we learn. the people on this planet would not be here today if they never stuffed up. glad to see you on the forum Dorian. regards.

Dorian - strange but I was thinking of this today and then heard a segment about this on local ABC....now your post.
Personally I don't worry about mistakes or errors of judgement, my regrets are for how my actions (of the heart) have hurt others...emotionally which is the worst hurt. Luck has allowed me to extricate myself on all occasions and I've had a very fortunate life. However there is always a legacy. Selfishness I think is my downfall and I fight it every day.
Regards

There are different types of regrets, not the same for everyone, and I am sure a lot of people would have done differently if they had their time over again.   Unfortunately now is the only time we have and no guarantee of tomorrow, so we need to make the most of what we have and try not to dwell on what may have been.  That's my take anyway.

Bobby McFerrin is still alive and well - I'm sure he has many times quoted Mark Twain that reports of his death were highly exaggerated (or words to that effect).

Thanks for pointing that out Joe, I am glad he didn't, I just checked it out on Snopes;

http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/mcferrin.asp

According to the snopes link the person who wrote the music for "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile" did though, which is sad.

In regards to regrets, a lot of people have them and there is nothing wrong with having them IMHO, it is not dwelling on them or knowing how to deal with them which is important, but they will always be there, just try not to allow them to dominate your life.

If anybody says they do not have regrets then they have had a very fortunate life indeed.
