Sydney water unfit to drink.

Found this while casting around yesterday.

http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/1998/09/syd-s11.html

"Sydney, a major financial centre in what is known as the developed world, has joined the ranks of the so-called Third World cities, from Jakarta to Addis Ababa and Caracas, where it is unsafe to drink the water."

hmmmm....its not come from exactly a reliable cause - a communist broadsheet and written by some person who is a Senate candidate (when and for what, if any, party - maybe the Socialists).

However, on an Australian news programme only a couple of weeks ago, there was a lengthy report about pollution from rain water and overflow sewage from new towns which have been allowed by the State Govt to be built around their long established water dams. But there was no mention of diseases coming out of Sydney taps - but there were high levels of hormones from contraceptive pills. The same problem in London has produced fish in the Thames and ducks in ponds in southern UK with both sexual organs as well as them changing gender

I have to wonder about this recycled sewage they claim is safe to drink with all the meds us oldies take peed down the toilets, I can't see how they could be filtered out of the drinking water recycling system....hmm confuse

apparently hormones, particularly those like testosterone and the like are very hard to filter out, whatever the process, and will last for many years (eg recycled water to be stored in underground aquifers in WA).

The Sydney water pollution item was on one of the Sunday night TV news programmes a few weeks ago

I actually think that it is because of all the pig droppings, caused by the promises made by politicians............

The original article was published in 1998 when the media was reporting huge outbreaks of gastro type symptoms resulting from high levels of Giardia and Cryptosperidium in Sydney's water supply. This was a typical media over-reation. Once the dust settled and calmer heads examined the details it was revealed that there was no significant increase in hospital admissions for Giardia or Cryptospreidium related illnesses and there was no actual increase in the levels of these parasites in the water supply anyway - just the purchase by Sydney Water of new sampling and analysis equipment that was better able to detect the presence of these bugs in the water supply. This was almost 20 years ago why are we talking about what is almost ancient history?

Dave

 Morning Dave,

I realised the article was 17 years old when I made the OP.

Makes up a little for this thread http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t59812642/south-australian-drinking-water/ discussing water problems in SA that existed over 60 years ago.

I think the point people miss is the fact that here in Oz we take high quality drinking water pretty much for granted, on the rare occasion we run into something below standard its a case of shock horror, the sky is falling.wink
