Round plug to Rectangular

This is my problem  I'm in Yulara NT and off to Adelaide to buy second hand van which has the old round fitting for lights power etc from van to car and on my Pajero i have the standard 7 pin I think plug. So what can I do is it a matter of getting the new fitting for the van  and trying to figure out the wiring. I need some serious help here. all advice appreciated   Bru

Some more info would be good ie:

What is the "old" round plug are you referring to - 6 pin (smaller) 5 pin or a 7 pin without power for electric brakes etc.

Standard 7 pin plugs are often only wired for 5 pins ie, R/L ind/brakes/parking lights and earth and 2 spare pins (elec brakes or fridge for instance).

Does your van have override or electric brakes.

Any info will help.

You also can buy adaptor at place like super cheap 6 pin to 7 pin

yes but not enough wires for fridge and elec brakes and earth, however a separate earth wire is a temp solution to this.

yes but these rely on you having the CORRECT wiring at each plug,,, and that's what we need to find out before we even think of adapters. The OP seems to see some problems.

We plan to be in Adelaide the weekend the 23/24 so i hope ita as simple as an adaptor   no elec brakes I Think I'd better chect that out  Its all new to me  thanks Bru

OK of you need some help just PM me. I can at least look at it for you,,, I'm ex mechanic and done 100's of rewires before we had auto electricians around. Only too happy to help especialy as I'm ex NT (25 yrs).

 Bru, I think you will find that the van plug will be wired to the standards. What makes you think it will not be? Here is a link to the standard for all the common plugs and sockets. Book mark it for future use and/or print it out. Note the colours of the wires and the pin numbers when you remove the wires from the plug. If you put them back on the correct pins on the new plug then things should work (providing the rest of the wiring and the light fittings are OK.)

Here is a link to the types of connectors you can purchase. You did not tell us if round plug was the large or small one. Also is the round plug a 6 or 7 pin model? If you are thinking of going the adaptor way check that out before acquiring the adaptor. You can get them for all combinations of plug/sockets except for the 12 pin ones.

 Yes that needs checking out.

If the van has over-ride brakes and a 6 pin connector then the fridge wiring will be connected to the brake wiring pin if it is a three way fridge. If you have a three way fridge and you wish to power it from the tugs alternator and also have it work efficiently I suggest you change both the plug and socket to 12 pin ones. You will also need to rewire the van. Also check that the hot wire from the battery to your towbar socket is at least 6 square mm (6 mm2) and not 6 mm auto cable as there is not 6 mm2 of copper in the auto cable, you will be lucky if there is 4 mm2 of copper in it. If you do not have sufficient copper in your cable you will get too much voltage drop over that length of cable to operate your fridge properly, If you upgrade the cable and not the connectors then you will burn the fridge pin out. (I found this out the hard way.) If you change the 7 pin flat socket for a 12 pin one then all your trailers with 7 pin plugs will mate with the small pins in the socket, the design of these connectors was deliberately done that way (however you can not mate a 12 pin plug with a 7 pin socket.) - (Then again, if your 7 pin connector is the large round one, ignore my ramblings, just make sure your cable is 6 mm2 in size.)

I've seen a plug-in unit that plugs into the socket and LED's light up to show the way wires are connected to plugs. Maybe Repco has.
