Hi out there, Pete and I are Newbies since Feb, bought our rig and spent 2 months traveling from Melb to Townsville till the cyclone was coming and went inland and back to Alice to work till dec. Full time in January hopefully. I was looking at Darwin parks and there is no way we are paying $55 p/n for a site so what we would like to know where is everyone going when they head north for the winter? Is there somewhere I haven't found yet or are all those grey nomads I'm envy of cause I'm stuck in Alice for winter going somewhere else? We would like to chase the nice weather next year with our to furry kids. Any help would be great.
Unfortunately, the 'colder' months are peak season in NT, FNQ and WA top end. Some caravan parks don't accept bookings. You need to line up in the morning outside the park and hope for the best.
I am sure some members here will have a view also.

When we went up through Alice Springs to Darwin and down the west coast last year we only booked a day ahead in the caravan parks and all was ok but in saying that we did nor stay in Broome itself, nor did we pay anywhere near $55 per night for a site. We stayed at Howard Springs in Darwin and Roebuck Plains just out of Broome. When we stayed at Wycliffe Well we enjoyed a 3 night stay for the price of 2, 2 meals in the restaurant for the price of 1 and a fuel discount. When you are doing your sums there are a lot of things to take into account.

Thanks for the reply, going over to Broome might be a good idea and down to Perth to see the grandkids when it warms up. I don't want to plan to much as we would like to just cruise the days away.
Vida - as a NZ born, but now WA'er, your comments warm my heart lol.
I always though the WA free camp sights were pretty poor and often complained on-line to Main Roads WA about dirty toilets and the snow (dirty toilet paper) bloding around these places.
But hacing been through SA, NSW and currently in VIC, I relaise how great WA's free sites are. The Main Roads dept are way ahead of the other States and if they put in potable water and power, some of the sites would happily attract a $25 pn charge. SA has got to be the bits. Few of them, the rest spots are just pull over areas and rough as guts roads (also applies to their tar sealed roads as well), very, very few toilets and look like they were made by Noah Industries. Between Port Augusta and Coober Peedy - the Stuart HW, which the SA Govt say on their website to be the premier Australian HW (what a laugh that is), theres only 2 toilets in over 1000 km.
