Australian university corruption

Watched 4corners last night. Unbelievable corruption at Australian universities in their relentless quest to chase income from foreign students. Corruption starts at the suitability tests, mostly in China, with fake papers forwarded to the universities on behalf of student who don't make the grade regarding their grasp of the English language. This particular episode is a must watch. Lecturers marking papers forced to pass a certain % of student regardless of their abilities. One case mentions this foreign student having being given a Nursing Certificate, was employed in an Aged Care facility. This person could not read or write English. Upon giving one of the patients his daily medicine, this person mistakenly gave him dishwashing liquid because he could not read the label. yes how this guy got the job as not explained. Scary to say the least. Don't take my word for it, watch a repeat of the program and judge for yourself.

Our local rag in Toowoomba had all the graduates listed last week and I commented to the wife that almost all (80%+) had Asian names. I didn't think about dodgy training as per 4 Corners but rather the fact that we seem to be training overseas students and NO Australians. So no engineers, doctors nurses etc for Australia. We seem to be on a rapidly increasing downward spiral in our once proud country.

Yes, I agree, what happened to our industries, where are all our Aussie school leavers going?

Many of those Asians are Aussies and do a great job, they strive to be a part of our wonderful way of life, but as you say, many come here from overseas "learn" then go back home.
If the story is true, surely the Uni's will eventually be discredited and lose business.

Although I never saw the 4 Corners program, I read about the fiasco with partly trained nurses getting their degrees, the lady quoted, a nurse, claimed that any rectification of that will have to come from them by way of industrial action. Sounds like "Dr" Patel is not the only fly in the medical ointment.

I guess all these alleged low achievers from Asia go back home and build all the junk we buy labelled "Australian, made in China!"

However, take heart, in our country, any uni graduates who do not shape up will be swiftly "shipped out" by the management of the company they join.

I recently did a stint in the Sunshine Coast Uni Private Hospital, a brand new hospital, run by Ramsay health, I cannot praise the staff highly enough, for their care and professionalism, I really cannot imagine any sub standard employee lasting for long in a company like Ramsays, or any other major Oz private company.

Have to stand up for most of the grads. I have worked with & assisted with training of students for a number of years, the foreign students (& there are a lot) may have had a strong accent but have all been very contentious & hard working. The Uni is constantly checking & testing them & getting nurse opinion of their ability. However if the student is not up to scratch they will get every assistance to improve but will not be passed if they are not good enough.

As a side note I asked the preceptors how many dropped out & was told 56% of first year students left as they didn't realise what the work involved. No Dr Right isn't going to sweep you off your feet, you will have to touch patients body fluids & you will get all the abuse you can handle.

Was speaking to a young Grad from India he was on his way to Brisbane to do a further 12 months training then he was returning home. He would work in the field under a particular scheme & after that he would be qualified as a doctor(equivalent to a nurse practitioner I believe). He has no desire to return to Aus but wishes to work in his home area & he will be a great loss to Qld health.

I completed my nursing degree in 2010 with UWS. One of the lectures who was on 4 corners last night was one of my lectures - a real joy to learn from her. I also saw a lot of international students and their learning experiences were so different to the Äussies" on campus. Where as we are independent learners, the international students all conferred together in such an obvious manner I don't believe they really learnt the whole syllabus like the rest of us had to. They never contributed in class and their capacity to discuss things in english was deplorable. Don't get me wrong, I admired these (mostly) young girls who were in a very unfamiliar environment, but as their capacity to be a competent nurse in Australia? A bit scary
