Hooray for John, yeoeleven's blog. I just had an epiphany and was able to go into Johns block on the laptop. Cant get it while on the phone which is where I was at the time of asking.
I think I have found all the info needed to get there. As I can't delete the opening post I though I better come on and clarify.
Just over the new bridge on the bruce highway turn into Carrara Road, At the heritage village turn left follow the road around to the free camp which is on the north side of the river
Well, there you go. You could be right Doug. I should have gone to Specsavers. Thanks to Dave I also found it on Wikicamps.
Will be interesting tomorrow trying to find it for real.
Easy to find, right on the highway, not far past the turnoff to the town of Calliope - the dump point is in town, on a block of land opposite the pub - great bakery in town, and a really good supermarket.

When I'm looking at or researching a camp site, after I have found it, I use satellite view or hybrid view if the map has it. Wikicamps and Google maps does. this gives me a good look at layout of the roads into the site and of the site itself.
I have stayed there for a couple of overnighters. The south side was still open a few weeks after Christmas.
I dunno about Wikicamps, but Camps 7 has Calliope River Rest Area listed - I assume it is the same one you refer to
