We live here in Albany what else do we need to do to stop these drownings ? I feel for the families involved . It's a dangerous coast line and the message is just not getting out there . People can get free use of life vests ,signs are up warning about the dangers and that lives have been lost .The Salmon Holes have had repeated media attention of late . Last Easter We had a group in the car park warning people, thankfully that worked with no lives lost but people can't be there 24/7 ! ! Suppose they can close the beach down but that will also stop people fishing of the beach also .Fishing off the beach at the Salmon holes is very safe just DONT FISH OFF THE ROCKS.

They don't believe the king waves exist because they can't see one. When they do see one it's too late.
We lived in WA for 36 years, those salmon holes are notorious and have been for decades.

Yes you are right Bevan , the waves at the Salmon Holes creep up from behind and just suck people into the water unfortunately. The people fishing usually are to busy concertrating on the water ahead of them and are swept away .Once in the water the undertow drags them down . Sorry not a nice subject just trying to get the message out there .
Please fellow nomads stay of the rocks when fishing in Albany .
The Salmon are on the bite at the moment in Albany off most local beaches in large numbers and they are large up to 4-5 kg

I have to agree with all the comments - 11 possibly avoidable deaths.

Rock fisherman need to start thinking about self preservation (i.e. Under $100 for a self inflating vest)

www.google.com.au/search

and like the people in NSW a while ago = some can't swim either......

I agree with you Dhutime, Those rocks look a great place to fish off but, One only knows about the big waves after they hit,

By them it's too late as the tally of lost people proves, there  is no grip on these rocks once you loose your footing, I've seen people dicing with death every time we have been down there,

In the picture below, the rocks mentioned are at the top, there is a good fishing beach right at  the bottom of the million steps leading down from the car park, but people will go a bit further, thinking the fishing will be better, regardless of the danger.

The sign at the bottom of the picture, warns of the danger , and as you can see by the date of my picture,

the sign has been there for some years now.

This is sad that people think they are invisible and let their guard down when fishing. I know of people who have been Surf fishing for years and one thing my friend has told me is you CAN NEVER turn your eyes off the water. He has been caught a few times with dorpping everything and running to save his life on the cliff edge and it is well known to taking lives. There are so many places for fishing why people do this is beyond me. Sorry I am a fisherwoman and a keen one at that but bugger if i'll ever be seen doing this. Especially if places are well known for taking lives.
Sad tho.

That's the normal thing roadtourer and it's usually possible to keep a look out ahead of you but at the Albany Salmon holes the waves creep up from behind because of the rocks to the left are around the corner and exposed to the ocean swells .See the photo K J posted .
