We want to buy a deep cycle battery to power our lights while free camping but are unsure what sort to buy. Can anyone out there who is using batteries please HELP.
I use Century C105 6 volt Deep Cycle batteries, 2 connected in Parallel to give 12 volts. You can buy a 12 volt version. They are not cheap. I can't recall cost of 6 volt batteries, but the 12 volt is around $600.00. My 6 volt batteries are 225 amp/hour each.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
I am currently using a century 120Ah AGM that cost me around $350. It is installed in the rear of my 4wd and is charged by a redarc dc-dc charger and 120 watts of solar panels on the roof rack. This setup runs my 80 litre fridge freezer.
BG I am sure you meant you hooked those 6v batteries in series to get 12v!! must have been a typo huh.

Big Gorilla, you mean you have the batteries connected in series to get 12 volts from two 6 volt batteries. "Not in parallel."
Your batteries are 225 amp/ hrs, that gives you 225 amp/hrs. You double the volts but not the amps.
Batteries that are connected in parallel, voltage remains the same and the amps are doubled.

We've had 4 Absorbed Power 100AH AGM batteries in van and 3 are 8 years old. we look after them and I've phoned the QLD distributor 3 times for supply info and nothing heard back.
I'm going to change to Fusion batteries 4 X 100ah and have a competitive price,, see this link
I use 1 only Lion DCM 31 120 amp battery with some success. Cost of $300
120 watt solar panel.
In our caravan we run all Led lights, sometimes a 12 volt fan and a water pump. No television.
We have been very happy with this amount of power, most times we stay out for 3 nights and then get low on water, we do enjoy this freedom of moving around. At our usage rate in not so average weather I would think I could go up towards 2 weeks of freedom camping.
We do have a second battery set up in the tow vehicle a smaller battery that I could connect to the van when needed.
