Diesel Heaters Cleaning

Can someone tell me how often a diesel heater has to  have the burner cleaned out - de sooted.  Just spoke to  an installer and he was I think saying burners even  have to be replaced. Dometic about $30.00 some of the others Hundreds of Dollars and some cheaper models can't get parts for.

Eberspacher advise an annual clean and I think a new combustion chamber every 5 years. Replacement of the injection filter is also required annually. Easiest to do by removing unit from van and doing on workbench. It is not difficult to carry out. What make of heater are you contemplating? Have a look at this site for pricing for Eberspacher and Webasto diesel heater parts "butlertechnik.com"

Thanks Alan , was thinking a Plana. But now leaning towards a Eberspacher or Webasto, mainly to do with back up parts and talking to an installer. They wouldn't say what brands but say they have vans in for service , heaters not working and can't get parts to fix ?? As I would use quite a bit don't really want something that is only going to last a year or two.. Checked out " butlertechnic" , great site . What way would you go ?

Stl we have an Eberspacher in our van and are very happy with its performance. The servicing is important as we found on last years trip to WA. We had a deal of trouble with ignition failure and ended up going to dometic for repair. The cause was a buildup of crud in the combustion chamber and an almost blocked injection filter. After repair all was good again. After returning home i stripped and cleaned the unit ready for this years winter trip and fitted a new injection filter. (I looked over the shoulder of the tech doing the repairs in Perth and saw that there was no problem for me to do the job myself). One thing I have done is to fit a small plastic fuel filter at the outlet of the diesel tank the prevent crud from blocking the very small filter that is fitted inside the pump unit.

I haven't had to .. Yet .. I was asking at the local caravan show how do they maintain /service them?
Other than spares he said they run cleaner on kero, said they use it to clean chamber etc...
I guess like most things running on diesel? It's the quality of it in the first place ...

Was reading your post about diesel heaters. We have bought a poptop, pickup in April. I get cold, have got a camper trailer at the moment. Shocked at some of the prices on eBay. $8,000.00 for some heaters. Am I reading this wrong or looking at the wrong thing
