Many times when watching the news, an offender has been apprehended by the police. As they are driven away in the police car, they can be seen giving the one finger salute to the media and whoever else happens to be nearby.
There was a recent one. This is the man who allegedly killed 'Masa', a young girl walking home in a park in Melbourne. This clown handed himself in, therefore one would conclude he is guilty. When being driven away he gave the one finger salute.
I find this action by these people most disrespectful to those who are left to pickup the pieces as well as the rest of us. It shows total lack of being unrepentant.
Does anyone know where to go to discuss this with the view of making it an offense for these people to do so?
Perhaps there should be MORE regulation on the media to ban inapproriate images, surely they could edit out these bits and still tell the story. and perhaps the one finger salute was solely intended for the media who stuck the camera in the guys face.

Sorry Larry, ! don't you think that would be a waste of time and effort, I do not think that anyone who has committed ANY offence serious enough to get Arrested, would give a ''Rat's Ar-e about being booked for the ''finger''
Don't worry, I can assure you the presiding magistrate reviews ALL when considering the case. They will not give the 'finger' when their case is heard and the 'finger' will be pretty limp when they find out what is ahead.

Daryl, I think you have missed the point. I am asking where to go and have a discussion and perhaps have something done then. You seem to have a 'head buried in the sand attitude'. Nothing gets done or changed that way.

Hang on and correct me if I'm wrong... He's just murdered someone, but you're very concerned and think he should be punished for flipping the bird? Or are you saying that the press is at fault for showing it on TV?

What I am saying is something should be done about the flipping bird. To me, having an offender or their friends do that to the press is disrespectful to the family of the victim and it is an acknowledgment that this person is NOT remorseful. Maybe extra jail time should be added or a monetary penalty.
Hope it is clearer now. The purpose of my original post was to ask the forum if anyone knows who to go to. MP? police?
Whilst doing that is probably offensive behaviour at worst, where it comes back to bite them is when the are being sentenced. Any submission made by their counsel as to regret or contrition does not get off the ground so any likely discount on sentence they might have got is gone. However, in murder convictions there is life so it would really only affect the non parole period. Trust me, it is brought up by the prosecution at sentence.
Hi Larry. Your local MP and the State and Federal Attoney Generals are the people to write to.
Sadly, I doubt if your efforts will have any effect.
These dickheads are not bright and rape and murder because they are aggressive and not normal (having been a cop for over 15 years, I know!!). Shouting insults, obscenities and giving the fingers is normal for these guys and remember they see it as a loss of face in having been caught so theyre angry and often that's the reason they do this rubbish to the press cameras.
They do get punishment for their behavior if they go to goal. Experienced inmates don't like arrogant (often young) guys and the ones who rape/murder/molest children and these guys will be beaten up for weeks and weeks (and sometimes raped themselves) while prison officers calmly look the other way. So they do get punishment eventually, even if it wasn't for their childish, arrogant behavior in front of the press

Hi Bruce and Bev, thank you for replying to the question I was actually asking. You are probably right. Now that I know where to go, I will give it a go. Do not hold your breath for an update as this will more them likely be a long drawn process.
At times I really feel sorry for some of the poo police have to put up with.
There was recent example that was mentioned in Sunday Night or 60 minutes. This was about a young girl, part aboriginal, who was out on the town in the early hours in early Jan last year and was reasonably intoxicated. The police asked her to move on. She and her friends decided to be non compliant. Shortly thereafter, the police officer arrested her and handcuffed her. The CCTV footage of the arrest was used against the police officer as he was deemed to have used 'too much' force. He also had to deal with her friends try to stop him.
Cut a long story short, this was all about blaming the police officer etc... From where I sit, no one asked the question: Where did this under aged girl and her friends, who were also under aged, got their alcohol from? Did they buy it themselves, in which case the bottle shop attended should have to justify why. If not who supplied them with the alcohol and they too should be asked to justify their actions.
Surely this is as relevant if not more as the police officer being accused of using too much force.
