Coober Pedy and travellinf towards Lake Eyre

We intend to run north from Port Augusta up the Stuart Highway to Coober Pedy on the instructions from the BOSS.

I would like to travel east across to William Creek and then down to Roxby Downs.

The road is all metalled.

Has anyone run this road recently and know what condition its in?  Not keen on 300km or so of corrugations and pot holes.  Assuming the road is good - is it worth going this way?  Don't really want to travel all the way back down the Stuart to Port Augusta before we head to Broken Hill

The map shows from Roxby Downs back to Woomera as sealed - is this part ok?

Im towing an on-road van (called all terrain by the maker, but that means no more than 5 bumps per km lol)

Pretty rough country up that way guys, you had best be prepared for corrugations and plenty of em.

Yep the road from Woomera to Roxby is sealed, its only about 80 kilometers.

Thanks for that Santa.

Theres no way I can convince the BOSS not to go to Coober Pedy - I'd rather follow the SA coast line around, but orders are orders:)

But I wont go out to William Creek etc - just haul my bum up the Stuart and then back down again to Port Augusta then over to Broken Hill.

Southern SA will have to wait to when we come back from QLD to WA

Reckon you will enjoy the trip up the Stuart, choose your time of year well, delightful during the cooler months, devastatingly hot during summer.

Be sure to visit the Breakaways just north of Coober Pedy, well worth a bit of dirt road.

We travelled up to see the Breakaways then Painted Desert from Coober up to the Pink Road House . IT would be a shame to miss the Breakaways & Painted Desert. Yes, they are wide dirt roads with some corrugations which depend on when the road graded but you travel according to the road conditions.
The road up from Roxby Downs is gravel & the same applies. We have travelled the full OOdnadata Track twice & both times found the road in fair to good condition but then again we are country folk who have lived with dirt roads.

I reckon it would be worth while giving someone up that way a call to get some info on the condition of the roads. They had a fair bit of rain up that way earlier this year and a bloke I met said the Oodnadata track and some of the other dirt and gravel tracks were pretty chewed up. We'll be heading up to Coober Pedy and getting a scenic flight over the lake and other areas rather than risk damaging the van and the truck. (Recommend the OP Shop on the Northern side of Coober Pedy.

Regards

Dave

The best way to see William Creek and Oodnadatta is to go on the postmans run from Coober Pedy. It's a bit expensive but probably cheaper then the damage to your light eight rig.
