Bikes - what to do??

Hi Fellow Grey Nomads  blankstare

We are almost ready to head off for the next 12 months doing the big lap. On on first trip we carried our large bikes inside the caravan which became a pain. We don't have room to add bike rack on A frame or back of caravan. Looking to purchase a couple of folding bikes. This is where I need some help please. Don't know where to buy them? Are they any good? Have looked at some images online and their wheels look so small, as my husband is rather large would they be safe?? Is there anyone out there who have them and can give me some advice please.

I have a fold up bike, got mine from Aldi as the last one in stock at $99. They are usually closer to $200. We bought one online for a friend, cost was about $150, delivered, and it was delivered to her house within three days! They are pretty strong, and yes the wheels are small, but they have gears, and the seat comes up a long way - even for a tallish person they would be ok, I think.

The 20 inch wheels are quite sturdy, not sure about anything smaller. Most are 20inch.

Welcome to the gang Super Oma, enjoy here and out in the playground.

To be sure, to be sure, about the bikes you ask about just put a pull start motor on them. Pull start them, lean against van and just sit back and relax. The pull starting will be enough exercise and no need to worry if your husband will be safe then.

If you want more exercise just walk around the block like I do,

He rode it one time, to go round and get fuel - reckons it was hard work, the bikes are quite heavy, for their size, and he has a very lightweight bike.  There were a few titters around the camp when he rode back on the little bike!!!!

Wonder if one of those large Plastic Lego Block storage cubes that OfficeWorks sells would do the trick, cause they'd not only be a lot lighter to cart round but would double for storage of other exercise equipment, like the skipping rope come clothes line....

I lead the morning exercise program at Greens Lake until I left last week so with that qualification I can approve the use of the plastic crate and the rope.

Good idea by the way.

You did not say how big he is. I know there are some that will accommodate people up to 150 kg - Introducing a Bike Friday for riders up to 330 pounds  Yes I have started with a premium brand. However they make a very good machine and they are about the lightest folding bikes you can get. They also fold up into smaller packages than most and tailored cases are available to stow them with little likelihood of damage.

There are plenty of vanners carrying folding bikes so they are, in general safe, if you get one that is rated to carry your weight. When looking at the specifications of the various models you will mostly find a maximum weight specification.

If you are a Choice member they have done a couple of surveys on them. You can read the start of one of the articles by clicking on the second result.

I'm not sure what bike stores are near you in central Vic but some of the larger cities will probably have one of two shops that you can talk to regarding the subject. Here are some other links you can view, their bikes may be in a more suitable price range for you than Bike Friday"

The Bicycle Store - XDS - Dahon - These are favoured by friends of ours, They are available around Victoria

There are many others available. Just insert "lolding bike" into your favourite search engine.

We have greenspeed recumberant trikes that fold up and fit in the back of the landcruiser. Easy to ride and very comfortable. Have a look at the greenspeed web sitebiggrin
