We have a Jayco Silverline we purchased new 12 months ago and water from the taps has a plastic/chemical taint to it obviously coming from the plastic plumbing pipes.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the taint? The water filter gets rid of it but that's a slow way of filling a kettle.
Gus, you have not qualified if the water is coming from mains or inboard tanks. We have had a similar issue when the boof at the stealership filled our water tanks using a garden hose.
Unless you use food grade hoses for your water, you will get this smell/taste. We use food grade hoses and have never had this issue. A lot of people use a garden hose for their water supplies.
As Deverall 11 said you need to use food grade water hoses.
I have some water tanks in my RV for drinking water and twice a year I buy a bottle of Milton Sterilising solution and empty the whole 750 Ml bottle into my water tank. Fill three quarters full. I'll then drive around for ten mins empty out the tank and then fill with clean water.
Never have a smell/taste problem afterwards.
It's considered safe to sterilise baby bottles so I have used it for five years now with no problems.
I agree that it's the garden hose that taints the water. The black plastic Jayco tanks never seem to add taste to the water, provided you fill with a proper food grade hose.
Hi. Try a cup of bleach in your water tank. Flush the taps, empty the tank and refill using correct hose type ie food grade hose. Your problem will be fixed. I am told its a good idea to flush the tank every 6 months. I do it and never have a problem. Hope this helps you. Cheers, Laurie.

I think if using bleach you need to get the correct one.
I used the wrong Bleach in a van a few years ago and it took about a year to get rid of the taste in the water. Tried all sorts of remedies without much success.
Theres a new chlorine based pill tablet recently on the market and carried by RV shops. One pill does 100 lt and cleans out the tanks and lines and gets rid of smell. It does amaze me how many people use ordinary garden hose to fill their tanks though. But be aware that the proper hoses do break down in sun light. I have 2 of them and about to ditch one as its getting to the plastic type smell stage

In 35+ years caravanning I quite often use a garden hose to fill my tanks. I do however flush the hose thoroughly to remove any water that has been sitting in the hose for more than a few minutes.
Have you never had a drink from a garden hose after running it for a few seconds to flush it? No taste is there? If there were then of course don't use it.
On the other hand, when in a van park and the van is connected to the water tap I will use my food grade hose as the water will sit in the hose in the sun and will acquire a taste.

I had an old Drinking water quality hose fail and the Plastic Taste appeared, the problem was that the Inner Lining had split allowing water
to penetrate through to the Outer Casing causing the Plastic taste. A new hose fixed the problem as the hose does harden and deteriorate in the sun with age.

I use my garden hose. It never sits out in the sun and its a quality 10+ year old hose..
Every now and then I add two cup full of sodium bicarbonate into drinking tank .. Then flush a few days latter ..
Run it through system . I have duel filter drinking water system which treats water pretty good..
Hi Gus, pope food grade water hose leaves a plastic taste it's a light blue and soft.Don't know if you have this one! Bunnings used to sell it ( maybe still do) and some hardware stores. I got caught out, bought a van then bought the pope hose , tried Milton , tried lemon tried everything , thinking it was the vans plumbing, didn't think it was the "food grade" hose but it was. Ended up buying a light blue food grade but it's quite hard. Now you can buy the White food grade ones as well.
If it looses its plastic taste after you run the tap for a while I'd say it's your hose. I see other people with garden hoses and pope hoses and they say it tastes funny sometimes but won't pay double the price to get the proper thing, personally I like good water.

Thank you everyone for your ideas, a lot of good suggestions and I will work through them all until I get a solution. I have always used food grade hoses on our vans so the first thing will be to run some water through the hose and into a glass container to see if the hose needs replacing.
