Nelly,

It is steep, winding & bitumen all the way.

I have towed a 17' caravan without any problems (summer months).

A very scenic drive if the weather is right.

Mike.

Nelly hi.

We were there last year in April leaving Cooma to go over to Adaminaby.

We did a side trip leaving the van a Cooma.

The road from Jindabyne is good quality tar down to Khancoban. There is some well place signage saying the road is not suitable for vehicles over such and such length for a starter, we noticed a serveral travellers ignored the sign and I would. Once you leave Thredbo you will climb to Dead Horse Gap where if you are lucky you will see a live one, leaving there the road will descend and climb for about 15 ks with twist and slow turns to you get to Tom Gorogins a point on the map where there is a huge area for camping and resting. None of this will done at a fast pace.

Leaving there the road more or less runs through the valley with slow corners and short rises and falls for about 20 ks to Geehi where there is more camping can be done, a much easier drive then the first but still slow with some places for a view an a rest.

The next section is possibly the hardest being the longer 37 ks with more interesting ups and downs, slow corners all taken at slow pace. This section I am relying on my memory and it was back about 10 years or so I really doubt if there has been any changes to the road in that time, there was some very slow short corners all taken at a slow pace by the time you get to there you will of had plenty of practise at choosing your pace.

I don't disagree with Recoup but it also a climb after the descend just for practise. A most enjoyable area and would love to do it again with our van in tow taking a few days to enjoy.

Do it at your pace, let faster vehicles through. Enjoy you may only do it once and I for one would like to here your tales after.

I did in the Eighties move some machinery along this road from Cabramurra in those days it was a mixture of dirt and tar with a large truck Ralph.

Thank you all for your replies. Radar I will be driving a Mercedes Sprinter - is it allowed on the road. Slow and steady seems to be order of the day.

Nellie a great way to do this road trip, a big yes

Don't forget to leave a bit of extra time to really enjoy this great area.

The road is closed at times when the snow falls get to heavy or ice on the road. There is plenty of warning at the park entry before Thedbo and have your NSW National Parks Senior Card up to date for cheaper entry as its part of N/P area.

The first time we were there on our honeymoon end of  April 1970 this road was closed due to an early snow fall, we then needed to back track to get to our destination and go the long way round form Kancoban to Thredbo via some unsealled roads at the time.

Great memories.  Ralph.

Nellie hi.

I would suggest you go to NSW National Parks web site. Try nationalparks.nsw.gov.au

Green card NPWS Exemption Card. Good for 12 months, must be displayed on dash.

Saves paying car entry fees into parks. Ralph.
