My beloved Disco 2 TD5 >5 pot> Automatic had the power to pull my 19' Heritage, and sundry Horse Floats/Trailers faultlessly.......while it remained upright......I had also fitted heavy duty springs and upgraded shockers front and rear so there was no rear sag..plus 18" wheels......high cross winds and a tandem trailer blowing a tyre brought me undone....they are an excellent vehicle and I miss mine....especially the armchair spacious view of the road....it is inherently a safe vehicle amply demonstrated by apart from the glass splinters I was totally protected in that roll over, hanging upside down in my seat belt for some 20 minutes, whilst I was extricated...the cabin strength did not allow the roof to crush my head..there's plenty of cars on the road I would not like to take my chances in, in similar circumstances...<I was still in the vehicle in that second photo, and the motor was still running as I could not reach my keys to turn it off initially>..

Only problems inherent in the Disco2's is most suffer from oil leaks to motor or transmission or both...it is a rare Disco indeed that is clean of oil underneath in both areas....and the 'three amigos'..three warning lights with your ACE coming on intermittently will drive you crazy..google 'Discovery 3 amigos' and you will know what to expect.....you have to be committed somewhat to drive a Disco2.....Hoo Roo

I loved my disco 2 td5 , it towed my 24 foot van with ease, mine was chipped and also had diesel gas set up BUT there is a cooling pipe up under the turbo that cost me an engine, I thought I had replaced all cooling hoses and didn't know of that one. Replace ALL the coolant rubber hoses even if they look ok and I mean all. Have a low coolant sensor fitted. Apart from that they are a comfy vehicle with good visibility, I miss my disco
cheers

Agreed blaze..I had just replaced all eleven <11> hoses on my Disco2 TD5 shortly before its demise...and also another tip..don't use the clips each hose comes with, get the real deal with quality screw tightners...my car was written off by Insurance..I wish I had taken some of my accessories, brand new HD battery ,jack etc etc before I saw the pitiful amount Insurance offered.....they don't hold resale value, and mine had only done K150 kms.....not in relation to what they cost to replace with equivalent...Hoo Roo

Another happy ex owner. At least I was happy until the oil pump stuffed up at 250K. The only oil leaks I had were the drive shafts out of the transfer case, the oil seals go hard and wear the shaft..

Towing performance was fairly good. I could keep up with Cruisers pulling on flat or slightly undulating country. Then when we came to hills things changed, the Disco D2 then eat the Cruiser. The auto ratios coupled by the extra torque from the torque converter make for excellent hill climbing.

A tip though on hill climbing, if the gear box does not change down when you are on slow winding hills and the tacho is sitting around 2,000 RPM then manually change down. At 2K the torque converter is doing a lot of work. It is thus producing a lot of heat. When you get the revs over 3K the converter is not doing much work (ie the output speed is not much less than the input speed.) The extra work on long gradients will heat up the oil and bring on the gear box light. It happened twice to me, changing to a lower gear quickly extinguished the light without having to stop, That's the difference between spinning the engine up with a lower gear and not doing so and making the torque converter produce the extra torque. This applies to all other auto boxes, keep the engine revs up so you don't overheat the transmission, beats installing an extra oil cooler.
