Gary I had that happen to me ages ago and I took the cassette out again to find there was a little bit of grass and dust at the end of the shute where the cassette sits that must have been holding back from actually going into place properly. Cleaned all that out and wiped it all nice and clean and no problems. Have not had that happen again. Just a thought.

The problem that I had with mine was that the 'pendulum' came off its hinges. I did the hand in the hole trick & put it back in place. Only problem was that I fitted it on the wrong side of a limiting ridge inside the cassette so that it was swinging nowhere near the outside reed relay assembly. Buggar. Had to get it off again & put it on the correct side of the ridge.
I had no trouble in getting my hand in & out.
It might be an idea to have a go and CAREFULLY swing the pendulum to see if the light goes out.
I suspect that yours is jammed in the horizontal 'full' position.
If you can't get your hand in try soaking it upside down for a few days to make sure that the whole of the pendulum is immersed & then giving it a good flush out with a hose (not too hard a jet though) pointing up towards the pendulum.
