omnidirectional TV aerial

 Folks...

I tried the search bar, but not too much for "omnidirectional"....

I currently have a satisfactory TV aerial, but it requires all the connecting up procedure...pole, cable etc and a bit of aiming to get best reception, and I detest "fiddling"....

Can anyone tell me whether these white plastic enclosed "omnidirectional" types are effective.

I know they are really only intended for urban use, but I'm not that interested in commercial TV to spend thousands for a sat system.

(I would rather just choose a DVD from the collection that we carry...no ads either !!)

I just want something I can bolt to the roof, run a cable through, and thereafter just switch on/off....hallelujah !!!

I assume the white "flying saucer" shaped ones that bolt to the roof would be ok at cruising speeds, if I fit it robustly...

but DO THEY WORK ???...that's the question.

We've been enjoying the Sprinter for a little while now....had several trips away, and another 5 days coming up soon.

Thanks for those who take the time to answer...the experience of other travellers is invaluable, and much appreciated.

I am currently using a "Jack" antenna and seems fine. Has a built in amplifyer and you can wire it in then just rotate a knob from inside to find best sygnal. If you have a smartphone, download an App called "Antenna Mate" it will locate the best sygnal for you and you then just point the antenna in that direction.

I had a "Saturn" antenna first up, one of those big white round ones with a big ball in the middle, they reckon that is omnidirectional but I found it a heap of garbage really but that was me and others might like them.

I have intermittent signal . To me that sounds like a bad connection some where?
Was looking at new areal ? Then rewire as its only a few meters cable .
I assume any connection issues will be at the ends . But being on roof of motorhome and wind up areal
Damage could be in cable ? I assume the Omni areal would be better on higher van or motorhome ?
One thing for sure .. You don't have to worry about winding it down..

When we purchased our new van it came with one of those flying saucer Omni directional antenna. It lasted 3 months replacing it with a Wynguard which we are very happy with. In some places everyone around us with other types of antenna had TV reception and we had none. So in my opinion omni directional are a waste of money.

OK...thanks guys....and yeah...I researched a bit more on the net about those things and all the tech guys reckon they're a waste of time and money.
So I guess i'll stick with the one I have, and learn a little patience !!...or watch less TV...( might be an intelligent option)
